Did it really pull out all the threads?
I have a metric tap & die set, if there's enough material left for a temporary repair. No helicoil kit here, though. Sorry. |

Just a heads up, Dentsport has performed this procedure before. In case you don't want to do it yourself... Aluminium, i wouldn't.

I think we have some left at the shop. I can check tomorrow. You'll need the installation tool and a tap as well.
That's a bummer btw. Seems to happen a lot. Slather that ish with antiseize once you get it fixed. |

Well Erics car is offically stranded at my house. The caliper was bad, really bad. He is going to work on fixing it tomorrow Note to self: never change rotors on cars with aluminum calipers.

you guys were at the autoparts store with the heli-coil set in your hands, did you f up drilling or taping? and yes we did have a good laugh at your expense today. you know i would have done more than i did IF i hadnt driven 275 miles today, adding another 200 would have killed me. ted |

they didn't have the correct pitch helicoil at the store- they had 1.25 and 1.75, but no 1.5.
it's a good excuse to buy this really nice tap/die set i've been eyeing up |

same damn thing happened to me swapping my rotors out on my 2004 STi. it's totally weak!! I ended up just drilling and tapping to an M14 bolt. so now I've got a hex head M12, and an Allen head M14 in EACH CALIPER!!
I've pretty much made the decision not to touch the brakes again until I a) have a separate ride to work, and b) have the money to drop on a full brake upgrade. PS - if you are drilling out for a heli-coil, that shouldn't be too bad. if you are drilling for just a larger bolt like I did, remember that you need to increase the passthrough hole in the steering knuckle as well. |

Yeah it happened to me. It's happened to pretty much every STi I know except two - my 06 and Squinty Joe's. First thing SJ did when he got his car was to anti-seize those bolts. How they weren't seized on my new car, I'm not sure, but there's anti-seize on mine now too.

why does this suprise most everybody? the factory does not use anti-seize, when you get the car pull the bolts and coat them up and yes to much anti-seize is bad. |

i couldn't get all of the aluminum out of the bolt with a pick, so i wanted a die to clean up the threads a bit. since this is the second time in a week i've been to the store to buy a tap or die, i figured it was time to get an entire set there's SOME logic there.... also, the bolts are m12x1.5. i verified today (in case other people have to deal with this) mike |
