Default Bend, Oregon Tuners

Hi guys. I know there are alot of Soobee owners here in Bend. Who would you recommend as the best "Tuner" in town? My 07' STI is all stock; but I will be putting in a catback (or turbo back) exhaust in the next few weeks. Thanks in advance!

I'd be willing to bet that if you type "oregon tuner" or "oregon tune" into the seach utility this forum has built in, you'd probably find your answer. Just a hunch.

Well; see; thats like saying I should look in the phone book. I wanted to have a discussion concerning this because there are more than 1 in Bend; and I needed to hear opinions on who's best. I'm a first time STI owner; and am not familiar with who people take their Subees to.

Well; see; that is like saying that none of the previous conversations on this topic are relevant. This topic has been discussed before, I promise. There isn't much help in Bend, however, tons of options in PDX.

Not trying to shoo you away, I'm actually trying to help....the fastest most efficient way to get the answers you seek are to do what I previously suggested.

I understand that, I'm familiar with the geography of the northwest. The problem is you don't have many options in BEND. I'm sorry you don't like the answer you're getting, but its the way it is.

EDIT: I just checked, I traveled 162miles from my town down to Surgeline Tuning in Tigard to get my car tuned. FYI, you might have to travel if you want it done right.

I don't want to jump to conclusions, but it kinda sounds like you don't want me talking to local guys about our common interest in Subaru's. I know of 3 local BEND places that tune Subaru's but I want to speak to people that have first hand experience with these (and maybe more) specialized businesses. Yeah; I reaslize I can go to the Subaru dealer here in Bend; or I can go to Idaho. Hey; how about Southern California? I don't get it man; unless you are a moderator, and it's strictly forbidden to ask about good tuners; why do you even waste your time with empty answers that help NOBODY? Is it just that you want to get a rise out of someone? You say that I'm gonna have to go to PDX area, but you don't even say the name of the business! (Silverline? Subaru of Gresham?) You see? Now you are wating MY TIME

DUDE SEARCH! I'm not going to do it for you. I typed in "Oregon tuner" and I came up with about 97 threads that have good discussions in them about this topic.

what are those 3 places in Bend?

I'm not wasting your time, YOU are the one that is posting a question about something that has been covered OVER AND OVER AND OVER again.

We have no "tuners" in bend, Your best bet is either an accessport, or an open source stage two.

IMO, 145 miles is a short distance to travel for a top quality tune.

This is really "bizzaro world isn't it? You mean to say that "THERE ARE NO TUNERS HERE IN BEND".

Ok; lets try this another way. I'll spell it out for you. As I said; my STI is STOCK. I will be upgrading the exhaust system. It IS NOT a race car; a Rally car; or drag car. It won't do a 12 second quarter mile like yours evidently does. It is not "chipped". As i also said; I know of 3 businesses here in Bend that do "tune" Subaru's. But that is geared more toward ALL Soobees. Outbacks; Legacy's, Imprezas, and the like. Knowing that there are MANY STI cars around here; I'm sure that somebody somewhere in Bend has had their car "tuned" after adding some mods. I'd like to talk with those (evidently rare) people about who they have work on their cars; and where they have had their car on a dyno. I don't want to have to leave my car over in Portland for a few days waiting to get it tuned to run right with the exhaust upgrades. Does that make any sense? I just want it to run efficiantly and the way it should. I did use the search utility long before posting my question. All I was needing was a one line answer like "I took my STI to this guy and he got it running great after I got the air flowing without so much restriction".
I can look through the phone book as anyone can and find businesses that work on import cars; but it's worth much more to make a friend that recommends a good Subaru mechanic that has a dyno and all the neccessary equipment to get my car running at it's top performance. Is that too far out of the question? Or is it too much hassle to actually recommend a shop?

OK, I get it...You don't understand what a "tuner" is. When you get your car "tuned" that means that you either put it on a dyno, or drive it on the street with a computer hooked up to it to allow the "tuner" to access and change the fuel map/timing/boost/etc that will allow your car to run properly after you put on your aftermarket exhaust. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN AT ANY NORMAL SUBARU SHOP, THIS ONLY HAPPENS AT SPECIALTY SHOPS.

Are there shops that will put your new exhaust on your car for you in Bend? probably, that isn't hard.

Are there any Subaru "tuners" in Bend that will tune your cars computer to properly run with the new found peramiters that the new exhaust gives it? No.

Oh, and just for your knowlege, your car will have over 300hp/300tq with the new exhaust...wont be hard for it to do a "12 second quarter mile"....fyi. It sounds like you have a lot to learn. So, again, SEARCH.

This is what I do. This is my shop. This is "MECHANICAL HP"...........Subaru's are computerized. I don't do that; nor do I have the equipment to do that. It's ONE of the reasons they (muscle car freaks) call them "Ricers" ....because of all the high tech electric computerized performance. It took me alot of years to quit being racist when it came to "Hot Rods". I also don't do NITROUS.......I'm old school. Mechanical Horsepower. Blowers and Turbos are fine; but front wheel drive cars were too.......oriental for me. Then our government wants to start the attack on old gas guzzlers; so I go Subaru. I guess you CAN teach an old dog new tricks..................maybe?
No offense man. I just wanted to get a grip on this new "ricer" I've aquired.

I think he just means that they are foreign to HIM.

You have a VERY nice Subaru sir...make sure you treat it right. What I mean by that is, take the 140mile trip up to Surgeline Tuning and have Tim Bailey put in on a dyno and tune the car. It is downright SCARY what he can do to your car with just a computer.

EDIT: remember, you can't just "throw an exhaust" on these cars. You need to adjust all of the air/fuel ratios, timing, etc once you do that....that is where the tuning/tuner comes in.

Of coarse; but until the ricer cars became popular; the "drag racing" community didn't give them a second look. They were all gas savers. Now with the fulfillment of it becomming the "computer age"; FWD, AWD, and RWD are all competitive. It's amazing what some of the ricer cars are doing in the NHRA these days! (But alot of the old guys still don't like the asian invasion.) But hell; I came around. I think these cars are cool as can be. I like sideways G-force!

Carartist,

I saw your other thread when you first got your STi. You sure found a very fine specimen, congrats on that.

Seeing as how you're coming from a totally different kind of performance cars, there's bound to be some confusion, hopefully you're getting to understand this community a little better.

Yes, a lot of the "modding" and "tuning" that we do to our cars involves messing with the electronics. In a nutshell, there are two schools of thought on this:

1. buy an accessport and use the Off The Shelf (OTS) maps or some custom-created maps by a local tuner.
2. go directly to a local tuner and get an Open Source tune.

We don't need this thread to become a debate on which is better, I'm not even going to touch that one. You can find many threads on that, with people on both sides, defending their opinions quite heatedly.

If you're going to be changing the way your engine breathes in or out, you definitely want to change the way the computer controls the engine. Whether you go with AP or Open Source or something else is up to you. Searching this forum for other people's opinions and experiences is a good start. A lot of these topics are covered over and over again, both in this regional forum and in the technical ones (yes it's good to venture out of the NWIC every once in a while!)

A thread such as this one is good too, but you have to be careful. If you'd started your first post with some background on yourself (and skip the "ricer" comments, we're not "ricers", hondas are "ricers" ) it would've made things a little easier to understand.

In time you'll find that this is a very good community, but you have to put in a bit of time, get to know the lay of the land, see if your question has been asked (and answered) before, etc.

and avoid that 12sechatch guy. he's a jerk.

just kidding. he's awesome.

good luck, and again, welcome to the community.

Thanks for the reply "stinkyrex" At this point I should probably just shut up and let it go......EXCEPT; I don't understand why the hostility to a (not so dumb) question? I only asked who somebody would recommend IN BEND to work on my car? There is a thread in this NWIC forum asking for people to post pics of their cars. It must have over 60 or so people/cars who live here in Bend! It would be the same as if I'd seen a WRX in the Fred Meyer parking lot and asked him who tunes his car. Except this is MUCH easier. It's not a matter of being too lazy to "search". I did search; and there are no references to Bend Oregon Tuners. I don't get why I'm wrong to ask that.

Default Muffler what?

Any muffler shop can put it on. You don't need a tuner shop.
