DR20T’s MY00 Australian GC8 WRX Build - POZ35D
Hi All,
Been around here for a while - previously had the version 10 GRB spec c ej207 in an MY04 Australian delivered Liberty (Legacy) GT. Sold that a couple of years back and moved away from Subarus for a while. Had an Audi s3 with stage 2 mods etc but found that really mundane and boring to be honest. Was lucky enough to get a new work car so found this little beauty as a weekend car. Decided to start a build thread for my new project - it’s an Australian delivered MY00 WRX. Have owned it for about 7 months. This is how I bought her: What it came with: OEM EJ205 with BOV and 3” TBE Unknown coilovers with BC springs 10kg Front 8kg rear (I think they’re the maxspeeding rods nasty ones) Replica recaro seats Rays engineering Sti RS Zero (S201) 17x7.5 forged monoblock wheels with RE003 tyres all round Rebuilt 5 speed box with short shifter and hd exedy clutch Dba T2’s all round and I think bendix pads Carbon fibre sti front strut brace and white line rear strut bar JDM sti tailights JDM Sti cluster Sound system (alpine amp and 12” sub with four kicker speakers and pioneer headunit with Bluetooth) Various autometer gauges Well it didn’t take long for the bug to bite again and in the first three weeks of ownership I purchased the following for her: JDM V8 EJ207 Sti complete engine Aus spec ej207 ecu and transponder etc 2002 full wiring harness for wiring merge job PPG loaded 5 speed (straight cut 1/2 and helical 3/4 - synchro not dog engagement) VF48 (will throw twin scroll housing on this to use with my twin scroll jdm headers) - ended up running the vf37 noting they’re internally exactly the same with a differnt housing obviously for twin scroll Arp 2000 head studs 2015 STi OEM TMIC Mishimoto silicon kit Custom CAI with AEM dryflow filter in inner guard GFB Respons adjustable BOV AP Suretrac r160 LSD diff (need to change pinion and crown to suit 3.54 ratio) Id1300x injectors Walbro 460 Raceworks Surge tank setup and AN fittings Radium fuel rail kit and torque solutions fittings and lines Process West splitter for gc8 (to suit wider tmic) Twin scroll bell mouth dump pipe starter (will weld to my existing 3” dump” Various new gaskets etc to suit above Killer B sump baffle Pierburg 3 port bcs DBA T3 front rotors Winmax w5 front pads Dot 5.1 fluid Kap industries fire extinguisher mount Genuine JDM V5 Type R alloy control arms JDM GC8 Sti quick steering rack New MCA Reds valved / sprung for my setup And most importantly - new led’s for the interior... Also bought a set of 22b pedals which are in pretty good condition (have the wider bottom accelerator pedal for heel / toe) Plan is to use this as a weekend car with 4-6 track days a year Have installed all of the above and loaded the latest Carberry 16 bit rom on there (4.2) - have been tuning the rom and have recently rescaled the maf accurately - it’s now making 342g/second and 3.91 g/rev load - which is pretty cool for a vf37 e85 setup. I have also purchased a genuine Garrett GTX2867 Gen 2 which I will be putting a kinugawa twin scroll housing on to suit the stock jdm twin scroll headers (stock location) - waiting on the housing to become available again so this is on hold until then. Any thoughts and advice welcome Cheers Mick

Thanks mate.
Here are some more pics. The engine bay pic was a couple of weeks ago so some things have been cleaned up and changed since then Also - didn’t mention but I also bought another gc8 in world rally blue. This had a blown engine so i threw my stock ej205 motor from the silver one into this and she’s running great. Bonus was the genuine sti lip and fog light covers, jdm sti type r 4.44 5 speed and rear diff and a few other little bits and bobs. This was is going to be a keeper for storage. So I’ve scaled my maf pretty close with corrections / learning now down to under 3% either way
I’ve got it setup to switch from map to SD at 10psi boost (24.7psia) with 85% blending from 0psi boost (14.7psia) Logged a second gear pull onto freeway ramp today and the car jumped a little after hitting a slight bump - revs jumped from 7300 to 7645 in next log line, and airflow g/s went from 348g/s to 379. Can someone help me explain what I perceive to be an inaccurate airflow reading seeing as my maf is scaled? Or is perhaps my maf scaling out at higher voltage but I’m not seeing it because my final fuel base is changing due to the switch to SD at 10psi boost? If my last comment / question is confirmed, this would explain the high reading right? Can’t see how a vf37 at 22psi tapering to 18.5 can be making that sort of hp Mick |

You should fix your links so they show the pic in your thread, so no one has to click any of the links.

I did it on the app so it’s showing for me on here in the thread. Do I just add image tags to them?

GC8 Doors
Hey mate,
Beautiful ride and work. Can anyone advise if GC8 sedan front doors also be used on a 2.5 coupe? Picking up some front doors from a sedan and want to make sure they're can swap out without issue. |

No, the coupe and sedan doors are different in length. To the OP, nice little old school Impreza. These cars really are the best and it looks like you have a real nice starting point for an awesome car long term. |

Thanks mate. Yes as stated coupe and sedan door differnt lengths. You lucky bastards in the US got the 2.5rs two door A 2 door was only released as a v5 sti in Australia - 300 of them released. These fetch anywhere from $45,000 to $100,000 now in Australia depending on condition and originality! Mick |

Mick, you’ve had this issue (blip/blank in rpm in logs) before, with the Lib/Leg.
Was it the stock location lift pump choking on the restrictive stock jet pump? |

Good memory. But that was completely different. Car is actually running great. Just the question regarding reading of maf g/s with a blended carberry rom.
The lib had a stumble at transition from vacuum to boost which I ended up putting down to the twist mount adapter Mick |

I also considered the Blouch 1.5 XT-R out of convenience, but I think it's a little too large for the responsiveness that I'm after. I'd be content with ~400whp on E85. Thanks for the assistance. Good luck with your build! Cant wait to see the results. Edit: I reached out to Kinugawa and they only plan to offer twin entry (not twin scroll) housings for some of the GT lineup (Garrett GT3071R & HKS 2835). My search for my ideal twin scroll turbo will continue Last edited by WRXnick16; 03-10-2020 at 02:10 PM. |

Yeah unfortunately they came to me in February and said the back order is indefinite. They had one listed on their store and when I went to order it in November, it was unavailable. Was told production would resume in January then well that changed. Thanks for your kind words. My thinking was aligned with yours initially around response vs power - hopefully not giving too much up with the Blouch but will update once im done tuning. Thanks Mick |

So the Blouch 1.5 xtr twin scroll is in. Had an issue with the coolant pipe hitting the GRB STI intercooler - some bending of the pipe fixed that.
Absolutely love this turbo. I honestly feel like it’s more responsive off boost than the vf37 - I put that down to reduced back pressure from the larger wheel and housing so the avcs can be optimized better to allow the engine to breathe thus improve VE. This is supported by me having to fine tweak my open loop fueling and VE table at 0-10psi Running 24psi I clicked 4.27 g/rev load and looks like the maf is maxed out at 399.99g/s airflow. That’s running 15 degrees in the midrange and 22 up top. So a little more headroom. Overall really happy with this turbo. Just need to fix a slight stumble at 5-7psi which I believe is related to the load smoothing due my blended mad/sd tune on carberry. Mick |

Thanks mate - I do love the tidiness of the car. I have to clean up the engine bay a little better to my liking but slowly Changed plugs today. Here are how the iridium plugs that were in there before look: |
