Default AT to MT trans swap questions and pricing

I'm looking at a 2000 RS that is swapped with a 2003 WRX engine...only problem is that its an auto. It has Prodrive GC 06D goldies on it with new tires that I wouldn't want and it seems like I could get a good amount of money for them to fund swapping the trans. I did some searching but couldn't find some ballpark estimates.

I would most likely have ECS or DSG do the trans swap..but does anyone have any suggestions with what type of trans I should get? I'm thinking a low mileage RS trans or JDM 5sp..I like the short gearing for acceleration but is there anyway I could get this and have longer top gears for highway driving?

I found a complete list of parts that you need and I am thinking I would buy it from a wrecked rs/wrx..I'm just looking for a price so if you know about total pricing or have actually done it yourself, I'd appreciate the advice/warning.
Am I stupid for wanting to do this??

Mechanically not too hard - wiring up reverse lights, and incompatible electronic stuff left over from the auto trans and ECU might cause a problem but not insurmountable. If you have a list of parts needed you know you need a new driveshaft, pedal box (I have one if you want to buy it), transmission/clutch/flywheel, stuff for the hydraulics, matching rear diff, fluid, maybe front axles? not sure about that...

It's hard to price it out for you if you don't know what you want. Obviously a junkyard 5-speed will be cheaper than a JDM STI RA 5-speed. I started to swap a late 90's RS 5-speed into a 1999 4EAT Legacy at one time but gave up.

All the parts including upgraded clutch/flywheel were about $1200. I got a guy at a Honda shop to do the major mechanical aspects of the swap for $350 I think but we never got past day 1 cause I was missing a few parts and ended up selling the car...

So, parts for a basic 5-speed swap should be about $1000 plus labor. A shiny, expensive-type place like ECS will likely charge you an arm and a leg for this. Find a friend or someone who does work like this on the side to help you if you're on a budget.

search my screenname in here or maybe in the Subaru conversions. I did one a few years ago.

You'll need more parts than you think, I dont remember exactly what needed to be swapped over but there was some misc stuff like ABS pump, starter, etc.

Where are you located Greddy? I have a complete 5 speed drivetrain I'm trying to sell. Tranny, Diff, axles and shifter.

I'm in the hole on my 6 speed swap. Need to pay it down some.

Hey There,

I recently did an AT to MT swap in my Impreza....and here are a few details about the swap for you.

My car was an MY00 Impreza LS wagon (1.8) until it was converted into a hybrid RS2.5. A new longblock SOHC EJ25 NA was swapped in and suspension mods done. After 30,000km with the engine in on the original 4eat, I started getting some slipping from the AT, so I decided it was time for a swap to an MT.

I sourced an EDM '00 Impreza GT (WRX old designation) 5 speed tranny. My rear diff is an R160 with 4.11 gears, so I had to change out the 4.444 gear from the GT tranny. The AT was pulled, as well as the center drive shaft to make way for the MT and new Driveshaft....

With the MT, I purchased a new clutch and clutch cover (start from new is best than dealing with used)....all was put together and installed on the car....the install went fine.

Then, tuning was a bit of a pain, but I found the EDM wiring diagrams and that made things much easier. I had to disconnect the TCU, re-wire the reverse lights and make sure that the correct wores were repositioned to make the ECU think the car is an MT......if you can get the right wiring diagram and pin locations for your car...it'll be really easy to do.....

That's about all it took to get the swap done......

Cheers
