when most ppl refer to catbacks, are they including the midpipe?

cuz some posts about 'catback for sale' have midpipes included... while some dont.

Question

is a Cobb AP/protune needed for just a catback install or will it cause damage without it?

Cat backs are fine no need for engine management.

Sorry, but ive posted this question on wrxatlanta, RS25 and in the noob section here, and i cant seem to get a solid answer..... Im lookin at an aftermarket catback system for a 06-07 2.5i that someone is selling for a really good price, possibly purchasing this weekend....I drive a 04 2.5RS....is this a direct bolt on or am i gonna have some problems with this? How much would it cost me if there are modifications required.

Yes, its called to go your local muffler shop and have them make an exhaust....it's that simple.

Which route would I be better off going, cost doesn't really matter between the two. In terms of reliability and hp gain. A cat back, mid pipe and down pipe...or a turbo back?

Being that this is an 'air-flow' thread, should the TGV be mentioned? I think most people would be reading this to do upgrades and I think that makes the TGV applicable.

I was just curious, coming from stock - are the gains between doing the downpipe vs just the catback similar? Are most of the gains to be had for the downpipe? or are power gains 'sequential' - ie. will just an axleback have little effect if you are using the comparitively restrictive stock DP/midpipe?

The gains will mostly come from the downpipe. You'll get more gains from an axle-back if you already have a downpipe. An axle-back alone is only going to net you a couple of HP.

Those are in the "other side" of the system; definitely don't belong in an exhaust discussion.

Well...

I spent about 20+ hours of research online. I got a little advice from a performance dealer in Lake Placid, NY. I was surprised at how much feedback I got from www.nasioc.com and www.lisc.com. The feedback I got here turned out to be some of the best advice yet.

I was torn between getting a ABE for the price but I really wanted the CBE for the sound and better performance. I had to upgrade my budget.

At first I liked Cobb the best. After secretly picking my Fiancé's brain I discovered she was a sucker for the dual tip exhaust. That and some feedback sent me to Stromung.

I even researched the residual value of the CBEs in case we trade her car or need to get cash fast. Everything pointed to Stromung as far as residual value. Next up was Prodrive and then Cobb. Those seemed to be a large demand across multiple Subaru enthusiast forums for pre-owned, good condition Stromung catbacks.

I decided to go with the Stromung. After some number crunching I decided that the CBE was a better deal than the ABE. Both in pricing and in actual performance gain (as small a gain as it will be). I figured I'd buy the entire thing now since I would eventually end up doing so anyway.

I pulled the trigger with Rich at www.daddysscp.com. I got a little sweeter deal than what they posted on their site and I'm pleased with how everything turned out. I can't wait to get the CBE on her WRX!

Thank you to everyone who helped me out!

If your car just got stolen this morning, why are you concerned with a new exhaust?

If it's louder, he can hear where the thief is going.
