Thanks, a pain in the ass.

Good news is not only is that fixed, but it has a new screen, fuel filter, coil packs, and Crank angle sensor.

It's running great.

Now We have the decide on the top. Get a new softtop or spend the same money and pick up a hardtop. During all of this, the original back window decided to give up the ghost.

I was fortunate to find a nice used top already on a frame.. quickest solo top change ever.

hard tops kinda went bonkers when everyone got their covid check.. people were basically signing the check over for a hard top.

So I'm really on the fence of where I want to go with 2002 SE.

I could reasonable NA power at around 145WHP for 2500ish.

Or go balls to the wall and get EFR turbo 225-350whp for 5000ish.

Only thing I'm worried about with the EFR setup is getting emissions checked. Seems like a pain in the ass to take everything off just to pass a test every two years. I could also wait till 2022 and go historic vehicle status.

Anyone have direct comparisons of NA vs turbo power on a miata? This is strictly a street driven weekend/fun car.

I have a turbo miata that I drive occasionally, I honestly don't even remember what it felt like NA. You can obviously wind it out on the street in NA form and not be breaking any laws, but its not going to feel quick or put you back in your seat. Depends on your expectations.

Mine wheel hops like mad in 1/2 gear. I don't punch it off the line fearing I'll break a half shaft, transmission, etc... Its fun watching the speedo needle climb quickly but its gets into reckless driving territory too quickly. I have the fab9 EFR kit myself, made 300whp on 10psi w/2.5L motor from a fusion. Also, my fuel economy sucks comparatively, 25mpg highway

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like you have an NC? Yeah I guess the question is, do it right the first time and wait a year or two, or do it piecemeal over 3-5 years.

Yeah NC. I just had the engine swap and turbo done at the same time by the shop.

fab9 turbo kit is like $5500, engine swap/labor was another $3k I believe. I should have just saved that money for a corbette.

I'm guessing you don't have stiffer engine mounts or an engine brace? I have both, and they really help to transmit your power into forward thrust, instead of the engine bucking and unintended driveline movement.

300whp in a sub 2600 lb car. With a short wheelbase. On street tires. Part of my brain wants that, but the rational part goes "maybe that's a bit overkill". If I had to guess, I'd bet my NC is around 150-155 whp. The engine is super responsive and fun to get on at legal speeds. I don't know when or where I could take advantage of 300 whp.

Here's another option. $3200 is kinda not bad.

I have stiffer mounts, but not an engine brace. 300whp is absolutely overkill. My lack of skill and the cars lack of stability control makes for butt puckering moments here in the PNW.

Dynotronics did the work on my car. They're ok.

I think I found my plan of attack. Get the MS3PNP pro during black friday. Do DIY intake for cheap and fun sounds while I wait for the turbo build.

I thought at one point a turbo miata sounds awesome, but I can't imagine the amount of tickets I would get. As it is now that I upgraded the suspension it takes a lot of willpower to keep myself in check on the twisties.

My S/C NA was one of the most fun cars I have ever owned. While it didn’t have the peak power of a turbo, the instantaneous application of power at a level (220 ish) that was almost perfect for the chassis was intoxicating.

One of the cars I truly regret selling.

Yea. I remember you saying about the SC but it doesn't seem many people are selling kits for the NB that are cheaper than Turbos. Thanks for the feedback Howard

Trust me, the turbo kits have improved 10000% since I was playing this game, and they are much better overall. I was just living in my nostalgia induced dreaming.

Oof.. given this snow event, not really out of season..

I had my miata in some snow for the first time in over a decade.. first time with the Torsen diff even. you could really feel it figure stuff.

It was slower to react than I really realized, good half second of mechanical reaction but it did put traction down! my prior winter experience with my NA it was still on an open diff.

Congrats.

I haven't stored mine yet, still hoping for that 50 + degree day in December.

Car is 2002 SE. Starting to part together my turbo project.

Supporting mods.
All maintenance addressed with 100K 20 old car
New CSF radiator
Super Miata Organic clutch

Parts ordered
Kraken Full hot side and intercooler
MS3 pro
AEM series X AFR and wideband

Still need to get
Turbo BW efr 6258
Flow force EV14 Injectors (trying decide between 640 and 900cc)
Tuning practice

I have to wait till after my emissions check this year to install things. Car will be 20 years old next year so I can get historic tags. Unless any one has ideas of how to pass.

Just picked it up? Nice. I bought a 01 LE I think. 6 spd with lsd and VVT. Need to replace the motor and get an alignment this spring after I wrench a bit more on the suspension.

So the 2003 SE is off to get a new top. I was going to replace it with a another twilight blue one, but that was a significant cost increase. So now I am going with a tan top.
