Default which shift knob (heavy or light?)

hey all

on my 11 wrx I have a k/b short shifter but stock knob. I really wanted a 'better feel' or more positive engagement of my cogs....

would I be better with a weighted down knob or one that is perhaps lighter than the stock one?

or will the feel be the same regardless of gram weight??

Get a heavier one. I purchased one and made shifting a lot smoother.

lathewerks and twmperformance make awesome shift knobs. I'm currently using one from twmperformance which is 1.07 pounds (485 grams) vs the 170? grams of the stocker. I didn't think it would make a huge difference but it made my short shifter feel exponentially better. Plus it looks awesome! Expensive, but I've never regretted it.
side note, metal shifters get hot during the summer o_o

Stock knob is 229 grams according to my scale. It will be as heavy or heavier than just about any aluminum or plastic/duracon shift knob out there. Steel ones will outweigh it by a lot, and they feel great. You can see the stock knob on a scale here:

I have a Kartboy aluminum shift knob: ~150 grams and a Flossy Elton Heavyweight: 545 grams- I actually like both equally. The heavier knob has a much, much smoother engagment but the KB knob feels better in my hand. I even like the stocker for cold days.

I got the Flossy heavyweight (~530 grams) and believe it or not it is a night and day difference, smooooooth shifting.

I got a 2012 STI knob on my 04 sti and its probably 4 times heavier than my stock 04 sti knob and I love the feel of it.

I can vouch for lathewerks quality, plus he can make just about anything you can dream up. lighter shift knob will allow you to feel the transmission more and give you a notchy feeling, heavier ones smooth the throws out and make your tranny seem more distant.

saw Xlubens knob and was impressed with the weight, but is 1.5 lbs pressing down on lever too much weight? concerning effect on trans.....

bc I always hear people saying NEVER to leave your hand resting on the shift knob.

same as all the one's above -> get a heavier one. I also have a KB SS but i changed the stock knob to the duracon 6spd. It looks fantastic but is waaay to light (even the stock knob is heavier and has a better shifting feel) Due to the leverage being less than stock with the KB and stiffer bushings the throws require more effort. Having a heavier knob helps alot with making the throws easier.

So yeah i'd look out for something heavier than stock.
