its all exactly the same man.

really. arco is your friend. costco. whatever. any station that doesn't seem totally shady is fine.

my grandpa was in the wholesale gas business for 40 years. he would deliver a tanker of gas to shell...the gas market is/was volatile...if the shell station had gotten a better deal, and already purchased gas that day, then he'd just sell the same gas to an amoco station down the way.

91 octane is 91 octane dude. the ONLY possible difference is additives like engine detergents and stuff.

no no no no no no no no and no......not all 91 oct is the same. I only fill up at 76 for a reason. Back when I had the sti and was just putting in the 20g my motor nearly blew because of chevrons pos fuel. While dyno tuning my car would refuse to make power and would det all over the place, the problem was chevrons so called 91 fuel. We took out the remaining fuel and filled up with some 76 91 oct and all was well, it made power again and no more det. It may say 91 but I don't think we are getting a true 91 over here thats why I fill up 1.5 gallons 0f 101 on every tank.

Not sure if its my imagination, but I'd swear my car runs better when I get gas from certain stations (regardless of brand).

that site even states that the only difference is in the detergents.

i'm not saying there's not bad gas out there. i'm just saying that you really can't determine anything from what chain it is, because they're FRANCHISES. Any station can be owned by any random dude who wanted to run a gas station. and said dude can easily buy generic wholesale cali91 fuel, and sell it as fancy chevron fuel or whatever.

and it happens all the time. and thats a fact.

I have heard from tuners that as a general rule, less detergents in the gas equal just a little more power. The trade-off for the little bit of extra power is that carbon deposits can build up with out the detergents. So what I was told to do was run the cheaper brands with non-detergent or lower detergent gasolines most of the time and then run a tank of something like Chevron or Shell every once in a while.

that is highly anecdotal, dubious, and confusing.

they actually asked that outta the blue, like it was a known issue? that's some compelling hearsay.

i notice a difference in fuels in my car. Never tried arco in the wrx. Mobil gas is crap for my daily driving. With a full tank of mobil ill get about 220 miles with a full tank. On cold morning it will det.
With shells and chevron i get about 240 miles on a full tank, same driving style. On cold morning i get no det. Car seems to run smoother.
With 76 gas i get about 260 miles with a full tank car seems to pull just slighter harder and smoother. No det.
I have logged data in my car before thats how i know i get det. Ecus pulls time when it dets.

Hope that gives you an idea on effects of those fuels with my drdiving habits and my car (03 wrx, cobb stg2)

Cheaper fuels can have a higher RON and a lower MON. I'm far from a fuel chemist. All I know is that 76 has the highest MON and that lots of tuners like to use shell because it has the lowest MON. You can tune to the highest MON available and run nothing but 76, but you run the risk of running out of gas when there are no 76 stations around. Dumping a few degrees of timing will let you run ray-ray's discount gas.

Stock ECU mappings don't run as much timing as the engine allows to make sure that engines aren't popping left and right due to bad/wrong gas. Start playing with the timing for more power and well... having a 76 credit card gets you discounts.

i was getting gas the other day and i pulled up behind a blinged-out BMW 540I. nice hamman rims, full kit, exhaust, and the guy is filling up with 87...

i tend to use 76.... just b/c it's the cheapest around. the only time i had "bad gas" was from a husky station up in monterey. filled up with 91 and had pinging under heavy load.
