Default My 06 STI at the track last night. 1/4 times.

So I got my STI to the track last night. My second time out there. When the car was bone stock, I was running a 13.7 @ 101.17mph with a 2.04 60' time. Crappy, I know, so I went in search of how to launch this bad boy. I returned to the track last night, and got 5 runs in. The only mods I have are a 3" TB exhaust and a tune.

Like I said, I had 5 runs.

First run: 13.55 @ 101.1mph, 1.79 60'

Second run: 13.23 @ 104.95mph, 2.01 60'

Thrid run: 13.16 @ 104.02mph, 1.94 60'

Fourth run: 13.13 @ 103.14mph, 1.88 60'

Fifth run: 13.17 @ 104.16mph, 2.00 60'

The times are pretty consistant, but as you can tell, my 60' times still SUCK. I had a great one the first run, but missed second gear, and pulled a 13.5. If I can get these 60" times down, I KNOW I can get into the 12's. I'm going to do a search on launching the STI, and see what I can come up with. I launched at like 6000rpm's. Someone told me high tire pressure. Who knows.

Nice times. If only you had the 60ft on your first run during the last four...

I gotta say, for someone that hasn't been to the track that much, you are running better than MANY '04 and '05 guys that have similar mods.

Hey, that's good to go. Funny, before I bought the STI, I was thinking that it would be so easy to just in, and launch perfect every time. Boy, was I wrong. Well, Firebird's friday night drags are only five days away...

How cold was it last night in Phoenix? I'm only asking because you are comparing your runs to others' runs who might be in a colder part of the country. Colda' = mo' powa'.

as others stated get your launches down to consistant 1.7's (just takes practice)

dont forget the i/c sprayer is your friend. keep your finger on it during the return trip on the 1/4, pop your hood and let the i/c cool down before each run. keep spraying water on it (it will evaporate pretty quickly) and it should cool down in about 15-20 min.

Also try not to idle that much prior to your run down the 1/4, ideally you want to start up the car (with water temp fully warm) and a cold I/c and run right down the 1/4.

you can also consider taking the wing off for an additional 1.5-2mph gain at the 1/4. It takes literally 5 min to do.

I used to trap close to what you were doing (104.9 & 105.2) and with a 1.758 60' I went 12.98 @ 104.9 and 12.975 @ 105.2, with dp, intake/pulley and wingless. You have 12's in the bag just a few more trips to the strip to get there.

Taking the wing off will add up to two full seconds on your ET? Im new too the subie world(or should I say large wing world).... enlighten me as to how removing a wing will add two seconds onto your time?

He is actually saying that removing the wing would add 1.5 to 2 mph to your pass. Probably resulting in a lower time.

I have never heard that before, and I have no particular experiance with it (as I don't have an STi so YMMV)

mph = 1/4 mile trap speeds (miles per hour)

faster trap speeds(mph) in the 1/4 mile = lower 1/4 mile ET (generally speaking)

ET= elapsed time, or the time measured to travel 0-1320 feet.

now knowing that
removal of the sti wing will add 1.5-2 mph to your trap speeds, and help decrease your 1/4 mile ET.

make more sense?

Thats not a bad idea, about the wing. I know the 06 STI puts down 50lbs of downforce @ 100 mph, so removing the wing would definately help me streamline.

people also fold their side mirrors in to reduce drag.
you can also duct tape all the creases along your hood, foglights and any other frontal area of the vehicle to reduce drag.
and throw some ice and vodka in your intercooler sprayer

Ah, oops. Read it wrong. Sorry.

1.5-2mph is still a pretty substantial gain just from removing a wing..

But then if you run a 13.8 people will laugh you off the track. I run mine how I drive it, the whole set-up thing just doesn't do it for me, especially given that the car isn't supposed to be a ¼-mile queen.

I'd be curious to see a test on this "removing the wing will get you 1.5-2 mph" theory.

I can surely see .5-1 mph because of less drag.

I ran my LGT several times as I would drive the car, then a couple runs with
my mirrors folded in.
I gained .3 mph on my trap speed that way.

The rear wing on the STI is obviously larger and drags more than the mirrors, but
doubtful enough to add 2 mph in the 1/4...but if someone has tested it
on the same track on the same day (as I did with folding in the mirrors) I'd love
to hear the results.

how about multiple tracks on multiple days? its not a theory belive it or not.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=898567

i bet you'll do backflips when I say that removal of the hood scoop adds at minimum .5 mph to your 1/8's and .7 to the 1/4.

My friend and I have launched his 04 sti (ap stage 2) at least 100 times from 5000-6000 rpm without any problems (most of these were autox launches). Still on the stock clutch and everything with almost 50000 miles on the odo.

Well, "theory" was the wrong word and I think you took it wrong.
What I meant by "theory" was your particular belief you'd gain
up to 2 mph from removing the wing.
Like I stated, no doubt removing anything that drags air will increase speed, but 2 mph for just the wing, to me was a "theory" since you didn't specifically say that you or some other people who've done it gained that much time.

As for the hood scoop removal...well again, no doubt because it drags air, but without some other way to feed air to the TMIC, you'd lose time because of
the intercooler not getting enough air and then it would heat up really fast, slowing you back down way more than the gain you'd see from removing the hood scoop.
