Where to buy removable camera mount for the car?
Since I will be participating in many track event, I like to save some footage about it.
I am having a difficult time finding a cheap removable camera mount. Someone posted about "Cruisecam" before, but I think they are having some paten issues. Anyone else makes a cheap solution?

Yeah, a tripod with lots of strategically-placed bungee cords!
Or punch 2 holes in the rear deck & strap the camera down there. |

It was me that posted about cruisecam - but I gave up on them since they didn't return my calls. Right now I'm dealing with the great guys up at TRI Tuning - they have a camera mount, and I should have one of the first next week. No idea of price, but I know that it fits onto the childseat mounts on the back. And the guys at TRI have been great. I'll post footage when I get it digitized, my track day is the 13th..
DON'T use a half-a$$ed tripod setup - if you have an off, that's at least a pound of camera rattling around the car. Plus, the track marshall may not let you on the track. Always better safe than sorry, even if it costs a little more.. Basil |

I agree wholeheartedly with Basil - most organizations won't let you anywhere near the track without a "real" mount of some sort.
Check out http://216.242.153.40/MembersList/Vi...28&PicNumber=4 and http://216.242.153.40/MembersList/Vi...28&PicNumber=5 , which are 2 pictures of the mount I created. You can see mine is setup to use a clamp-on mount that I bought from IO Port Racing for about $100. However, you could easily make a mount very similar to mine but substituting a platform rather than the PVC pipe and IO Port mount. I have to remove the lower seat cushion so I can use the seat cushion mounting bolts to hold the lower legs in place. The horizontal pieces go back to the package shelf, and there are bolts running down through the shelf (through existing holes in the metal framework under the shelf, not just through the cardboard stuff). All the material is angle aluminum which I got at Home Depot. It probably cost me under $40 for the materials. I have made 2 changes since these pictures were taken - (1) the horizontal pieces, which were originally flat 1" aluminum, have been replaced with 1" angle aluminum for better rigidity, and (2) I've added an angled piece, running from the PVC/leg joint on one side over to about 1/2 way down the opposite leg (hope that makes sense). Basically, the original design was a trapezoid shape in the vertical, which meant there was still a degree of freedom for the thing to move side-to-side. Putting that angled cross piece in there makes the top of the mount a triangle, which can only be in one position (thanks to good ol' Pythagoras). All in all this mount is VERY rigid, and it's bolted in with good fasteners. Since it's all aluminum or plastic (except for the stainless fasteners), it's light and will therefore have very little inertia in a collision. One last note - notice the red strap around the camera. That was provided by IO Port with the mount to act as a backup. Regardless of how stout your mount is, you really want to have some sort of strapping to act as a backup - some good industrial strength velco straps would probably do the trick. I thougt about making a camera mount similar to the "cruisecam". after seeing the cruisecam product, I got lazy and wanted to purchase one instead of making one.
But now, their distributor told me that they are having some patten issue. I guess I will try to make one over the weekend myself. I guess the bar itself it not difficult. the difficult part will be finding the proper "interface" between camera and the bar. So far I am still in the dark looking for the "interface". Any help? |
