My Potenza RE92A's are ruined.
Today I noticed that I have 2 bulges on my front right tire on my 08 2.5i with only 11000 miles on it.. I know for a fact I didn't run into any curbs. But I have to drive in an area with tons of pot holes on the West side of Chicago. Now I am looking into getting a whole new set of tires because the Potenza RE92A's are $215 per tire. I decided to look into Falken Sincera SN-828 tires. My buddy says they are good and they are rated highly.
My question is does anybody have the Falken Sincera SN-828 tires and are they any good? My next question is do I need to replace the front two tires or all four? Here are the pics of the wheel. The bulge is on the E in Potenza.

i bought kuhmo asx 225/45/17 for my 08 wrx. they handle better and are better in the snow than the stock re92s. they are half the price of the re92s also. just my opinion.

You should be "thankful" you don't have to wait until the RE-92's are worn out.
There are many tires you can put on, I prefer Pirelli P-Zero Nero M&S's for northern all season work. They are cheaper than the OEM tires and work a ton better. |

k. Is it weird that there are two bulges on only one tire? Could it be a manufacturing mistake or could that happen from hitting one pot hole?

Nah, a bulge means u broke the steel belt, which could be caused by a pot hole. If it was a manufacturer defect it would have happened alot sooner.

I vote potholes and curbs.
Yes ! You should be glad that you are free to put some good tires on there, just don't screw it up by wasting more money on bad tires. Your driving style and use of car will dictate a lot in this regard, followed lastly by budget. That should point you to no more than three tires on the current market. From there, nobody can choose for you. I was told by all kinds of people here not to buy the tires I was looking at, because they "sucked". I turn better times on those tires than some folks on the tires people here were telling me to get. I doubt if even 1/10 of the people who were dishing out advice on specific tires had ever driven on the ones I got, and probably a good chance they hadn't driven on the ones they were trying to steer me toward either. Good luck, and I hope you find something that allows you to fully enjoy your car. |

I hit a small but deep pothole with the same tire with 30K on the car/tires and had to get a new one. $273 all said and done. I almost cried. I hate to buy that tire because I know they suck, but I couldn't throw down for a new set right now. I also am in a tires for life program, so I need to keep that factory so I can get them replaced when they wear out in another 20k miles. I can't wait to get my new set so I can take off those rims and tires, keep them for winter use, and get a set of good performance Summer tires.

I have 40k miles on asx's. For an all-season tire, they have great dry traction, ok wet traction, and pretty horrible snow/ice traction. I've driven on various other all seasons that are substantially better. Would I buy them again? As a summer tire, yes, for all season if you don't swap to snows, nope.

I would think in Chicago you would want dedicated Summer/Winter tires.

I would take a gander at tireracks survey results and see how stuff stacks up and then get the price range worked out

ok i have 225/45/17 kumho asx put on about 20k miles on it. bought it with the intention of having a nice comfortable daily driver. has excellent treadwear. it'll last for another 30-40k with conservative driving. traction is okay until you put about 5k and then the breaking point comes wayy sooner. its relatively quiet compared to say a 2-ply summer tire. and is very comfortable absorbing bumps and irregularities with ease due to its soft sidewall. drove in the mud and got stuck. was a pain in the arse to get it out 45 min of pushing, reversing, waiting, sweating, cursing...
the squishy sidewall is also the downfall of these tires as it negates stiffer suspension mods. ultimately i was left wanting more traction for the spirited canyon runs as well as for daily driving because i want to take full advantage of my suspension set up. the tire squeals with moderate cornering. it squeals loud! like a swine moments before getting slaughtered loud. compared to the re92, the asx is much better. the v12 evo would be wayyyy better. now im debating swapping tires or waiting it out (which will take forever!) my advice to you is do your research and figure out what you want out of your tires, how you want your car to handle. im very much suspension oriented and tire counts as part of suspension. its arguably the best daily driver/ economical tire. it sux as a performance tire aka kumho asux. so ask yourself the following questions: what are your driving tendencies? are you sensible economical minded or performance minded? how do you intend to use your car? are you gonna be left wanting more? ps. don't ever mix-match tires. |
