Default EJ257 into 1999 Porsche 996 swap been done?

I came across a cheap '99 Porsche 996 and it has a blown engine. Anyone ever swap an STI engine into one of these? That and some GT3 bumpers would make a killer project car. oh man!

Thanks!

you would completely kill any value that the car has..... it would be cool to some subaru fans, but it would be a joke to the porsche guys....

but i admit that it would be interesting to see.

I believe I've seen it done. Was one of the Porsche forums. In fact what I saw was a Subaru 3.0 flat 6 install. Considering some year Porsche's have huge engine failure rates, I think it would be pretty sweet. What's a car needing a $12K motor worth anyway? If the OP's getting a good deal then apparently it's not much.

That's exactly my reasoning. The car is advertised for $15k with 53k miles. I bet you would have $5k into the subaru engine swap. Add in $2-3k for some GT3 bumpers and sideskirts and you would have a very cool car you could drive hard and maintain cheap. I agree there would be porsche owners cringing and the value wouldn't be necessarily that high but I still think it would maintain decent value if done right.

Pic for dream:

So are there any components available to make this a little easier? Maybe from the sandrail guys? Specifically thinking of transmission adapters and/or clutch/flywheel. What's nice when starting with a 996 is you could tap into the factory cooling system.

I think you should be budgeting closer to 10K for the swap. You have to custom make a significant number of parts and you'll have to buy an adapter kit to mount the subaru engine to the porsche tranny. Clutch and flywheel too.

Google is your friend. It's not that hard to find information about the subaru flat6 swap.

Can't I have both though? I have the '02 WRX (w/STI swap for winter) and I want the porsche for summer.

Here's the response I got from Kennedy Transmission when asked if they had a subaru to 996 adaptor:

"No we have not. Working on a LS1 to 996 but have not finished it yet and still
don't know how well it will work.

There was a 914 with a WRX motor dropped in that was featured in a past SubieSport mag, that company might be able to steer you in the right direction. There was also a vid on You TUbe of someone doing donuts in said car, contact info might be found there too. I don't know.....just could be somewhere to look for you.

That would be such a sweet swap. I've always been a fan of the 914. I wanted one sooo bad when I was a high-school kid.

Back to the OP, I say go for it! Maybe try to contact the company that does the Subie/914 swaps like 575rider suggested. Here is their site: http://www.renegadehybrids.com/

.

Talked to Renegade. Nice guys. They have no parts and no intentions of ever offering a subaru to 996 adapter or kit. They actually plan to do an LSx kit too. Looks like I am on my own if I decide to do this.

The 996 has so many modules and systems, you'll never integrate the subaru powertrain into it without losing half of what makes it such a great car. If you cant afford to fix it, I say leave it alone.

I reached out to KEP today and was informed that the position of the starter on the 996 prevents any type of mating to the WRX STI motors with an adapter plate.

looks like I will have to locate a 915 or G50 tranny to continue with my current project.

But it and build the motor. Have a great running Porsche for $25k. Swapping in a Ej257 is probably going to cost you around $10k if properly done. Maybe more.

Why would you desecrate an aircooled 996 with a water cooled Subaru engine?

Porsche 996

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

996 is the internal designation for the Porsche 911 model manufactured with first model year 1999 and last 2004. It was replaced by the Type 997 in model year 2005.

The 996 had little in common with its predecessor, with the first new chassis platform since the original 911 and a new water-cooled engine.

Not a 257 (nor a 996), but I am following this guy's build:
