I know you can use the 5sp clutch with the 6sp on a wrx block, not sure with it being the sti block though

Why would the block have anything to do with it? Head into the main section of the forum and do some searching, this question has been asked hundreds of times before.

IIRC you can use 5 spd clutch/flywheel with the 6 spd tranny. But you cannot use the 6 spd clutch/flywheel with a 5 spd tranny.

you most definitely can use the 6 speed clutch with a 5 speed transmission, you have to clearance some of the bell housing though. The blocks are exactly the same externally.

the amount of bellhousing clearing you have to do, is a lot... and most of the time if you use the right part for the job, you dont have to take a die grinder to your transmission.....

yes brewpub you are right I would recommend using the right part in most cases. I have a customer that wanted the 6 speed clutch because the 5 speed is too noisy. you don't have to take that much material off of the bell housing to fit the clutch. if you are going the opposite way as the op i would only recommend doing that with a high quality aftermarket clutch, ie.exedy twin plate or hyper single.
