I hate this feature. I see why people might want it but I hate it.

Sometimes it holds too long and I end up killing the engine. Or I'm paying attention to driving and then all of a sudden when I start to go I meet resistance and my instinct is that I've forgotten to release the handbrake so I quickly clutch in and have to start again... only I have NOT forgotten and it's the stupid hill assist.

I have a 2011 WRX so that "hold VDC" trick doesn't work for me?

I'll pull a fuse but I don't want a dash light on.
