i had a legit EVO 10 that was up at 400 whp. thing tore itself to bits and i was only at 30k. sure you can do it but youre going to pour all kinds of money into it just to replace things all the time. tpms sensors were being destroyed constantly, acs and abs were on and off, break wear, tire wear. 400 whp is too much for me now i know. got a 14 wrx hatch, gunna throw on the COBB tbe and AP and be done with it. better to drive a "slow" car fast then a fast car slow.

Im new to this forum and I just bought a 06 wrx. I am glad this is one of the first threads Ive read and it makes perfect sense. Im fine with my 230 hp right now. Maybe down the road I'd like to get close to 300 but Im perfectly happy as is! Happy to be part of the subie culture!

Hi everyone! I am new to the Subaru scene. I am currently looking for an STi. I had big plans on what mods I WANTED to do. This was a really great post and it definitely made me change my mind about half of the things I wanted to do. Being that I have never owned any kind of import or high performance car before, I don't think that I need to worry about modding it(mechanically) as soon as I get it.

Anyways long story short, this topic has really made me open my eyes and think about what I wanted to do in a different light. Thanks!!!

+1 i agree 100% man, i'm going to stick with the bread and butter of any scooby mods and that's the exhaust. I got an access port coming in the mail as well. But i defiantly don't plan on 400 plus WHP.

I have a hybrid build with 352awhp on a mild tune. And its MORE than enough power, especially for a DD when you consider the awd. There is no need for 400+ hp unless your tracking it often. Even then you still don't need really it.. I've had some experience driving high HP cars. 406hp ion redline (old car) 450 awhp evo (friends track car) etc, and that power is just not practical. As everyone knows, the more mods you do, your more likely to break something. 300hp on an sti or even wrx is still enough power to scare your friends, and sometimes yourself. I live in an area where mommy and daddy buy their kids everything.. there are kids running around with new gt mustangs, ss camaros, gtis, even new evos and subies. They all want to have to fastest car around but have no idea what its like to buy **** for themselves or how the car even works. Let alone know how to deal with 400+HP and not crash in a month..

Brilliant write up!! I'm pretty sure any newbie that goes around saying they want 400whp in any AWD car is pretty ignorant to any kind of performance car. I myself am a "scooby newbie" but i've had a couple cars with RWD putting down down between 280-300 and they were sketchy. A good friend of mine took me for a ride in his 320whp STi and holy ****!!! I nearly messed myself!! I have a '13 and i thinki dont even want to go over 300whp. Maybe less, i LOVE how my car drives and i dont really want to change it to the point that it doesnt feel the same anymore. I know someone out there feels me.

great thread, I think more people have to read this. I recently saw, first hand, a mortal crash at a drag race here in Peru. A very experienced driver died because of a small mistake... at high speed, 1 second in wich you can't see the road is easily over 200 feet.

This is an extremely informative thread. Kids get caught up on dyno numbers by watching all those 1400whp UGR Lambos screw around on the streets. In reality, there is a safety limit of how fast cars can be on the public roads. Dips, crevices, other erratic drivers are things you don't have to worry on a controlled environment like at the track/road racing but on the public roads, they become a much bigger factor the more power you have.

I've been running at 400whp for 55,000 miles and 500whp at 25,000 daily driven. I ONLY and I mean ONLY open my car up when ALL the criteria are met:

1. No traffic around me so I don't kill someone
2. Great visibility
3. Familiar road that is smooth and straight

I don't do stupid **** like race people on the road because frankly the car is way too powerful on public roads to the point where if I **** around, I'll make a mistake and cost my life or someone else's. You have to exercise a great deal of self-restraint - these high horsepower levels are not for the hot-blooded teenager. The hackneyed quote of "with great power comes great responsibility" rings especially true when you mod these cars.

This was a great sticky, I'm new to Soobies but not new to performance machines. I had an S2000 with ITB's and it freaked people out at 230 WHP... some people just don't realize how much certain power numbers really feel like.

Idk about you guys but also it's not the same when somebody take you for a ride in a 400whp if you don't have control it will scare you now when you drive your 400whp you can control it so you always want more power tho
