Default Gear oil on my wagon hatch carpet :unamused:

I picked up a rear diff a few weeks ago, which wasn't completely drained and ended up spilling a bit less than half a quart of gear oil on the removable carpet piece over the spare tire. I'm having a hell of a time trying to get it out. Any suggestions or tips on getting this crap out? I don't want to shell out an insane amount of money at the stealership for a new one.

Try getting one from another wrecked 07. Not sure what other years/models' rear carpet fits, but I would imagine there are plenty out there.

You could try some Oil Eater. I believe you can get it at an autoparts store, but that sounds like a lot of oil.

You could first try cat litter or anything else that absorbs oil...spread it over the area and hope that it sucks up anything on the surface.

Then a mixture of dawn and hot water in a handheld carpet shampooer.

If you can live without the stock carpet, a new mat can be made for cheap. Check this thread out...

It's for the newer Impreza hatch, but I don't see why it wouldn't work for an 07 wagon.

I did that exact same thing... but the carpet in my car gets sandy the day after I clean it out so I have no use redoing the carpet. I used shampoo and baking soda to get the smell out but the stain is pretty much there.

Make sure you clean it extra well or multiple times. I spilled gear oil in my old 79 Ford Bronco and cleaned it so many times. Still could smell it when I go into the car after the car sat with the windows closed for a couple of hours. I just could never get rid of the smell.
