Question MY98 RS Clutch chatter and engine rattle

I just purchased a MY98 DOHC RS. 46000Km (30,000 Mi). The car has so very bad clutch chatter if you shift hard. I was changing the oil yesterday and noticed that the front axles seem to be leaking. Is it posible that oil from this area has contaminated the cluch disc. Also when I first start the car when it's cold It sounds like I have some valve train noise, Is this normal?

If the car was purchased at a dealer (depending on Canada laws) it should have least a 30 day drivetrain warranty.

Did you have your mechanic look over the car before purchase? The chatter will require a new clutch or live with it. Do a search for more details.
Subaru says the startup noise is normal because of the valve lifters used in DOHC engines.

There is a Subaru TSB to replace the halfshaft grease free of charge on some MY98 cars, do you know if this was done?

Thumbs up

Thanks, the car was purchased privately. The seals should still be covered under the 5yr 60000Km warranty. I did not notice the clutch chatter when I test drove it. Maybe I didn't drive it hard enough or maybe my wife drove it to hard the first week I got it as I was out of town. For some reason she likes driving it better than her jeep TJ.

What would the cost difference be from stock clutch to aftermarket clutch, how much work is it to change clutch. I have lots of experience with RWD and 4X4's. but this is new territory

The LUK aftermarket kit is ~$225.
The ACT performance kit is ~$440.

Local shops want $200 for labor only.

The inboard front grease leak on MY98's is attributed to a too thin grease.

There is a service bulletin for the front axle seals. I would get them changed under warrantee and I am not sure about the clutch shudder. The axle seals were replaced under warrantee on my 98RS.

One note about the clutch chatter, since it can get expensive and you may want to talk to the seller about it:

When the clutch chatter happened on my MY98, it also took the flywheel and pressure plate with it (high and low spots on the flywheel)

Total for new flywheel, updated pressure plate (do a search, there's a newer part# from the forester that superceeds the old MY98 pressure plate), and clutch w/labor was going to be ~$1100, but I was able to get it warrantied by doing a lot of arguing and faxing to the service manager.

It CAN get expensive, so make sure you have it looked at.

$500? for AWD!

They do FWD cars here for $265 including part, although I won't vouge for the quality of the parts.

The next time you need a clutch job just bring your parts with you on vacation to sunny SD , and I'll show you where.
