Talking Just a new guy here!

Hi everybody!

I'm kinda new to the Impreza but I've looked around and decided to go and test drive the RS. I did that recently and finally have decided to buy it!

Anyways, I'm getting the car this Friday and I'm just wonder if you guys have any tip, advice or info for me?

My current goal is probably just to drive around and maybe join the local racing club. I want to do some mods, but none that will void my warrenty yet. I'm just a student and I don't have the money for extreme mods, so just something simple and good!

Also, is there anyone that lives in the Burnaby BC region that can help me out? Places to go to get stuff done, places to buy stuff etc?

Thanks a bunch! I'm really excited and happy about my new RS!

As said above. Get used to eating LOTS of Ramen Noodles. your gonna be joining mods-anonymous very soon!

Tips?
Go over that car witha fine tooth comb BEFORE you sign the papers. This goes for miles on the car that are over 20-30 miles. Freak about how people abuse demo cars. If there is so much as a nick in the paint anywhere show it to the sales guy and make a big deal out of it. for 2 reasons:
1.) subie paint sucks and make them see that
2.) gives you leverage for free stuff!

There were 2 nicks about the size of watch buttons on my passenger side door bumper. I freaked, and said things like.."Jeeze I reallly wanted to get it today too." T"hat's too bad. This is a bad omen. Maybe I'll look at the other cars on the lot...." and so on. These things don't mean squat to the dealer, but the sales guy will bend over backwards if he sees his guarenteed sale start to slip away. My sales guy came a runn'in with free touch up paint, dealer shirts, and floor mats. "Pick whatever you want." he said.

And Test drive it REGARDLESS of wheather you have already done so. When I went, I messed with the sales guy too.. with a worried look on my face, "Do you hear that?" With his face twice as worried as mine: "No, what sound.." Cutting him off, "there it is again!"

Ask for posters and any other freebies. ask for anything and everything before you sign. After that, they would just as soon kick you out the door, but untill you sign the dotted line you own the place! Abuse your power! Because in the comming years, ...they will be.

Oh, and if you have kids take them. And let them tear the place up too. the dealer will suddenly be in a hurry to "help" you get out of there quick. Don't have any kids? Borrow some.

Oh, and pick up some crush washers for future oil changes while your there.

Smile Great tips!

Geez, ChosenWon -

You play some rough hardball! Thanks for the tips - I won't be hitting the dealers until around January or so, but you gave me some ideas! Now if only I can keep a straight face while I'm doing it!

Hardball? Hell yeah! If you have the time, read the buying tips on edmunds site. There is pages and pages there. (legitamite info) EXTREMELY informative stuff. You will then realize just how much they are screw'in you.

"joining mods anonymous"?
Yep. once your sucked into the mod world you never get out.

You will start by saying, "Hey if I don hit the vending machine so much I can afford that shifter a week earlier...."

And then it gets worse..."If I don't eat at all on odd days, and eat Ramen noodles on even days, I can get that exhaust and Wing by the end of next month!"

And then it gets bad...."Man I really want a Turbo....I will have to get with one of the med students at school and find out what a liver will go for on Ebay...."

remember to "just say no" to all the extras that the finance & insurance guy will try to sell ya right as yer signin' the papers (eg. extended warranty, paint/upholstry protection, credit life & disability insurance, undercoating, etc.). really, none of that is worth the extra bones...most of it is pure profit for the dealer.

if the guy gets really persistent/jerky, here are some good responses to the sales pitch:

"extended warranty?? maybe if i was buyin' a chevy!"

"uhm, i'll prolly just get a can of scotchgard at walmart. thanks, tho!"

"if i'm dead, the last thing i'll worry about is the car payment."

"undercoat? that scene in Fargo killed me!! remember that? 'trukote!' <start laughin'>"

and last...
"if i buy that, will ya throw in them 17" BBS rally wheels with some pirellis for free?"

good luck!

Good thing you didn't get the WRX. You'd be eating Ramen without mods

Hehe...12 step program for Subie owners

Hello, my name is Micah. (Hi Micah!) I've had my car for almost 2 months now and I just hit the Ramen noodles stage.

Seriously though, I agree about saying no to the extras. I went to a dealership where my uncle knows the owner and they told me "it's a Subaru...you don't need the extended warranty". Didn't even try to sell it to me. It was great.

Josico - welcome from another 2002 RS newbie! Us new age RS owners need to stick together. As you will soon see, almost everything is new WRX or old RS. But here's a tip - most engine/tranny mods for the old RS work and most of the body/suspension/brakes mods work for us. But definitely check around before buying anything that doesn't say for 2002 RS. Everybody here will help out.

Yeah, welcome to the 02RS club! We're glad to have you!

They're all right about the mod disease, too. I have no money and a list of 3 mods I "need" ASAP!

I, chump that I am, was so excited to FINALLY be getting my RS that I signed on for an extended warranty. Then I got home and realized that if I mod the car like crazy, the warranty won't matter anyway! Luckily, the dealer let me change the warranty option before my first car payment. whew. "Yep, I'm the moron with the 7-year warranty on parts that are sitting in my garage"

ylexot is correct, you'll soon find that we're the designated homeless as well. It seems as if 2002 = WRX, and RS = 1998-2001. Oh well, we're here for ya!

Hehe.. oh god I think I'm already on step 11.. I haven't started the Ramen noodles diet, but somehow I convinced myself, that by eating less snacks I can buy my intake and exhaust faster!

Here we go.. I'm done for...

Hi all!

Thanks for the support, but I think I'm on the Ramen diet already just to pay for the RS haha

Anyways, if what you all say is true about the 2002 year, then why don't the moderators start a new section just for us so we can stick together? Think that is good? (Sorry I don't know the moderators that well yet, so I don't even know who they are yet )
