Default 2019 Golf Thread (The Penalty Area)

Herro. Welcome to 2019 golf thread. The sport of golf, not the car.

New rules coming into play this year will be interesting. Many have already seen the benefits of leaving the flag in during rounds. Also, all those hazards and stuff are now called penalty areas.

Been playing on a sim myself at Newport Indoor Golf (newportindoorgolf.com). They have 4 trackman bays setup and does a gret joerb. Don't have the room like Jahhhhd for a fancy indoor getup.

Left it in on every putt earlier this week and it definitely felt strange.

I haven't made a full swing/hit a golf ball since the beginning of October before I tore my calf. I have been chipping around the basement a bit with foam balls, though. My swing needs a full overhaul this season.

That's a pretty sweet basement setup...I need to go rent some indoor/Trackman time at 1 of my local indoor places soon to see how things are gonna go this year.

I haven't had a chance to apply these new rules yet, stupid weather and time constraints.

Damn you Jard for sending me down this home golf sim rabbit hole. Been looking at budget friendly set ups. I have a perfect spot in my unfinished basement for this package with a 55" TV mounted behind the net. And it's on sale! Optishot 2

I have a room in my basement that would be perfect for a sim setup ... but I think the ceiling might be a touch low. The price of a decent setup isn't astronomical anymore ... it's so tempting

The only launch monitors I would consider are the Skytrak or Foresight models.

Yeah, the Optishot isn't technically a launch monitor. It doesn't track the ball, but instead just checks the club head just before impact. There are a bunch of sensors in the little slot in the hitting surface right before impact that evaluates club head speed, face angles and stuff like that. Apparently it's pretty accurate, but is more of a simulator. It's a much more budget friendly alternative to Skytrak or Foresight for sure, and doesn't give the same info or as much true feedback.

I kinda agree about the launch monitors...Skytrak is probably the most budget-friendly but still accurate launch monitor, unless you found a nice used Foresight GC-2 model. I've never liked (or had accurate results) with much of anything else. The newer Trackman and GC-Quad are gonna cost about the same as a new Honda Fit (or more), so that's probably not feasible

And I'm working from home today, but work is super slow so there might be time for me to screw off and get an hour in at an indoor place after lunch. Hmmm...

*edit - got a 12-1pm slot and will be trying out a GC-Quad for the first time. Only $25/hr, too!

I would love to trade my Skytrak for a GCQuad or GC2 with HMT but it's at least 3x-10x the price.

I tested out the basement room that I want to use and it is 8'9" ... I can swing a 5 iron without hitting the ceiling, but I think a driver/woods would be a no go. I think 10' is the recommended minimum

I do have a double garage I could retrofit ... my wife uses one half and the other have is filled with old car/motorcycle parts, old stuff I never got around to throwing away and various boxes that can be moved elsewhere. Only problem is that I live in Canada and the garage can get pretty cold in the winter (which is when I think I would use it most). I could put a heater and insulate it by putting a wall up, but now I'm getting into construction costs on top of simulator costs.

The biggest problem of course is now I have the bug in me ... I'm not one to give up too easily. I'm tempted to cut a hole into the basement ceiling to see if there's any space in there ... but I know there is no way there's an extra foot hiding up there

Hmmmmm

I know I can get a little high with my follow-through on my driver if I'm swinging a little bad, so a low ceiling just immediately makes me nervous

Just fired up the last couple of holes for the Pebble Beach tournament (Phil has to win). I didn't watch any coverage yesterday, but hey, might as well do it on work time.

Heard about that. I don't think the substitute club caddie should have received the 10% a tour caddie normally would if his player had won, but what he did get was a bit short IMO. So many sides and pieces of the story come out. True they had the agreement about what he would get paid if kooch made the cut, made the final or won and word is Kooch offered an extra 15k on top but the dude declined because he wanted more.

I walked 9 yesterday with the wife and started my full bag fitting with irons on Thursday. It was beautiful out yesterday!

Fitting so far for irons using 7 iron heads:
Quote:
I went from struggling to break 100 last year to shooting a few rounds in the low 80s, and got down to a 16.7 (my first year keeping a handicap). I’ve been taking lessons and practicing consistently this winter.

Current gamer irons are 2016 Ping G with AWT 2.0 stiff shafts. I have a SkyTrak at home so I know my general ball speed, launch, and spin numbers - low 120s ball speed. I thought I was having a spin problem because the SkyTrak was only reading around 4,000 backspin - good for carry but not descent angle.

Fitting was done on a Trackman 4 at The Golf Doctor in Washington, D.C.
I warmed up and started hitting my gamer: beautiful baby draws back to the target line, low 120s ball speed, 18 degrees of launch, and high 5s or low 6s of spin. Carry was low 170s...

To not make the story too long, I hit a lot of shafts with an i210 head to get the shaft right and we settled on a PX LZ 5.5. Then we moved on to heads and there was one that immediately struck my eye - Srixon z585. I loved the look of the face and top line and the numbers showed that was a great combo for me. I only gained a few carry yards but the feel and distance dispersion were much better. We moved on to length discussions and grip size and found a setup that I’m really excited about.

I’ll end up with Srixon z585 4-AW, +1/4” long - high hips, and grips -1/64”

I’m super excited and can’t wait to hit them! I think this set will stay with me longer as I can continue to improve into them.

We also started wedge and putter fitting but haven’t finished yet. I’ll go back in a few weeks for driver and long game.

^ Very cool. When will you get them? I walked 12 holes yesterday. Hit it ok and like the new shafts. Getting out of bed this morning was a little tough. I am so out of golf shape.

Order will probably go in Monday to Srixon; through our county courses my BiL gets equipment at cost + 10%. I’m sure it will take at least two weeks for build and shipping...

I've always been intrigued by Srixon irons, but have never tried them.

After a couple of practice sessions the past couple of weeks, I don't think I'm gonna bother with new anything this year, except finding a new driver shaft. What I have now just has the worst feel (it's counterbalanced), and I have no idea where the club head is. My club just got their new shipment of Callaway demo stuff, including a couple different kinds of driver shafts that should fit what I'm looking for (Tensei Blue 60x and HZRDUS Smoke 60x). I'm pretty much done with my Tensei Orange experiment. I think I could still sell it for what I have in it, though.

Also, I couldn't watch any of the tournament at Riviera on Sunday. Watching super slow play is just brutal, and JB Holmes is the worst offender.

Had my long game fitting last night and wrote up my experience:

Quote:
Fitting was done on a Trackman 4 at The Golf Doctor in Washington, D.C.

Current driver: Ping G 10.5 with ProLaunch Blue 65S shaft @ 44.5"
Current fairway: Ping G 3W 14.5 with stock ping 65S shaft
Current hybrid: Callaway XR OS 22 degree with stock 60S shaft

I feel like I've become a much better iron striker over the past year but long continues to be a weakness. I struggle off the tee and take penalty strokes and don't have a good backup plan other than dropping the whole way down to 4i on tight holes. I told the fitter I hate my driver. I actually had a lesson focused on hitting my 3W last week and walked away thinking I needed to take it out of my bag completely. Hybrid has been improving since I can swing like an iron.

Started the fitting session by hitting driver, and hit my gamer okay, swing speed in the high 90s and ball speed in the 140s. Spin was mid-2000s. Moved into a M6 head with various shafts with mixed results. I was struggling with consistent strike and producing super high spin...

I hit a lot of shaft and head combinations. Most were not good, too high spin. Matt, the fitter, helped me out with some setup/stance changes and I adjusted my swing thought a bit to where I was at least hitting the ball consistently. It took a lot of balls and equipment changes and I was pretty beat by the end.

When all was said and done I hit the G400 LST 8.5 degree with an Evenflow Black 6.0 decently well, with manageable spin and a consistent increase in ball speed. Unfortunately that's an upcharge shaft, but it definitely felt the best. I'm looking around now to see if I can pick one up slightly used or still snag one from Ping at a discount.

We moved on to Fairways and I was dreading the first swing! I hit a few with my G and dropkicked them short and right. So Matt threw something together for me to try - Cobra F9 3-4 with Evenflow Black 75 6.0 ... I striped it - about 250y total! It felt so good to make solid contact and it felt effortless. What a change! In order to get that shaft, I would have to buy it at retail, and it's almost $300, so I tried the HZRDUS Smoke 70 6.0. It was okay but not as good. I think this might be where I splurge since I could really feel a huge difference in the more expensive shaft. This was amazing to me what a different an equipment change could make.

Moving on now to Hybrid, I hit my gamer pretty well (straight), about 215 total. I tried a Big Bertha and then a M6 22 degree with the Evenflow Black 85 6.0. Accuracy was good and distance was up - maybe another 15 yards over my gamer. I looked at buying one of these and that shaft is not offered by Taylor Made custom and the HZRDUS Smoke isn't shipping until May. My plan is to hold off and try to also hit the G410 hybrid with an Evenflow Black (fitter didn't have the Ping adapter yet). The Evenflow Black is a no upcharge shaft in the G410. I need to hit my new 4i and get baseline distances to see if I need a 22 or 19 degree hybrid as well.

So mixed results, would have loved to see better performance in the Driver and saw way better performance than hoped in the Fairway. I'll work a bit on my driver swing but not at the expense of iron striking. I feel like I have to find a balance there.

The whole process was enjoyable for me and I learned more about my own strengths and weaknesses. If you know some of the holes in your game you would like to help, GO GET FIT!

Neat! Always fun (and usually exhausting) to go through a fitting like that. You learn a lot about your swing, what works for you, what clubs you like/give you the best results, etc.

I've never had the chance to try out any of the Evenflow series, but I did use a HZRDUS Black for a while. I'll be trying out the Smoke here once it warms up a little bit more.

I went to the range yesterday (63 and sunny omgwtfbbq) and was smashing the irons, but my woods continue to be a mixed bag. I used to crush everything, but due to not playing enough lost it.

I have managed to recover my irons, but my woods are a sore spot.
I also (based on a post in here) realized no golf simulator in my basement. I don't have the ceiling height. I thought I did but a couple swings proved otherwise.

So I ordered the M6 this weekend to replace my current 2017 M2. I've been hitting my M2 driver only slightly farther than my M2 3w. I find that I launch it lower than ideal and it's simply not flying.

I went to the shop and hit just about everything new on the simulator and the M6 was the clear winner for me. I even put a couple of different shafts which seem to better fit my swing in my M2 and it still couldn't keep up with the M6. My second swing with the correct shaft on the M6 ended up at 326 yards. The longest with my M2 (which happened when I put the HZRDUS Smoke shaft in my M2) was 314.

While that one swing was significantly longer than anything else I hit, the average was also a bit higher with the M6. My dispersion with the M6 was much smaller and on mi****s the ball really does fly. I had a few which appeared to be off the toe and they were still rolling out there around 300 or so. Whereas with the other current offerings (my M2 included) the hits which were off center on the face would end up in that 285-290 range.

I'm excited for the new stick to show up to see if any this actually translates on the course lol. I feel like the simulator adds a good 15+ yards of roll out which never seems to happen on the course (unless it's 115* in the desert).

I think the biggest improvement with the M6 is the feel and sound. It feels so solid throughout the entire face and sounds really good. One of the better sounding drivers I have heard.... ever. Just a really solid thwack.

72* and sunny here this afternoon. I'm headed to the course in a few, anyone else? I'm going to walk as many as I can before dark.

If I can get my work done, I will be going out for a few holes or up to the range at a minimum. We're at 69 (guitar riff.mp3)
