stripped rear wheel stud...problems...
Ok, here goes. I've got a stripped stud on my passenger side rear wheel. I've got the caliper and rotor removed but I can't figure out what else to remove to get the damn stud out. I got no help from the suspension, rims, tires forum or my local forum, so I turn to this forum as my last hope. What else needs to be removed to get a stripped stud out? Should I disassemble the parking brake or remove the hub completely? If I need to remove the hub, is there a way to remove the huge hub nut if the car is already off the ground? What size is the hub nut? HELP! Please!

Look here:
http://www.geocities.com/subarushrine/wheelstuds.html No need to remove the hub. Do NOT remove the axle nut with the car on the ground, as that will damage the wheel bearing. The axle nut is 32 mm staked nut. Once you unstake it, it will turn quite easily with a long wrench. It's only 206 Nm... If you still have trouble with it, try a long pipe on the wrench -- it has never failed me. The axle nut MUST be discarded after removal. Use a new axle nut ever time. |

That's a very informative site. Thanks for the link. The only problem is that the site only discusses the front wheels, not the rear. There is a lot more crap getting in the way in the rear. The parking brake, the abs wheel speed sensor, and the dust shield are all in the way of removing the stud. You also said there is no need to remove the hub, but then give instructions on how to remove the axle nut. Should I remove the axle nut? If so, doesn't this also involve moving/removing the hub? I'm a little confused at this point and any additional help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

To clarify
Quote:
I gave you information about axle nut to answer your questions. I did not mean to imply that axle nut must be removed, I simply gave you tips on removing it, just FYI. Maybe you do need to remove the hub in this case, I am not sure. Like I said, the hub nut (or axle nut) size is 32 mm. It should not be reused. |

Update:
I've now removed the entire parking brake from the rear passenger side and have been able to extricate the stripped stud. Unfortunately I'm not having very much luck getting the new stud into the hub. It seems like I would need a specialty tool or hydraulic press to get the stud back into the hub. Does anyone know what tool will be needed to press the new stud into the hub? This is fairly urgent as I have no wheels until this gets finished. Anyone had any experience getting a stud back into a tight hub? TIA. -Brian |

nut
Use a lugnut to pul the new stud through. Insert it from the back, put the lugnut on it and tighten.
Put grease on the new stud to make it easier. |

Ok, so I'm now an expert at replacing wheels studs on the rear hub of a '93 legacy. I'm sure it's a pretty similar operation for most other subarus, equipped with ABS, as well. To get the stud out I had to completely disassemble the parking brake. I also had to remove the wheel speed sensor ring that is attached to the backside of the hub, which is for the ABS. With all of this, including the rotor and caliper, removed I was able to extricate the stud and put the new one in. Getting the stud back in was a problem and I had to devise my own method of pressing it into the hub. If anyone needs to know exactly how I did it you can email or PM me.
