Post Brake gurus...quick question

Hey guys,
Just wondering if it is "usual" that disk rotors get replaced after *edit* 23K *edit*miles or so...the local guy after my State Inspection told me that my pads were in close need of retirement, and if I was going to do that, I might as well change the rotors as well since they are "all grooved up." He was saying that resurfacing is a definite possibility but that performance would never be as good as original and that it would pretty much cost about half the amount of replacing the rotors.

Any opinions on what should be done?
I don't think I have enough money to replace the entire brake kit, so thats probably out of the question! Haha...Would love to though...

Thanks!
Jim

ideally, it would be great to replace both the rotors and pads, however, rotors aren't cheap.

as long as the rotors are still w/in manf. spec.s, i would just have them resurface. i usually resurface my rotors once or twice only, and swap them after that.

I've had my rotors turned twice (still within spec) $9.00 each at the locol car parts store.

My stock pads lasted me about 7,000 miles... They are wear items - the more/harder you work them, the quicker they go.

From the June 2001 Tech Tips:
Quote:
(06) 2002MY IMPREZA BRAKE ROTOR "SCORING"
2002MY Impreza brake rotors are treated with Da-Cromet, a silver colored rustproofing, which
will help keep the rotor surfaces from rusting during the initial stages of transportation.
Appearance of the front brake rotors (looking like they are scored) comes from the ingredients
of the Da-Cromet coating and the brake pad material. When heated due to repeated and sudden
stopping, the coating turns into a grain-like substance and adheres to the pad and rotor. This
gives it the appearance of looking like the rotor is scored.
Some of the Da-Cromet grains are usually left behind on the rotor surface and the brake pad.
This material will look like a silver line/score on the rotor surface. After several thousand miles
of driving, the grains and lines will disappear from the rotor surface.
The Da-Cromet coating tends to easily create this condition on the 2002 Impreza rotor due to a
reaction of the pad material (which is different from other models) reacting with the coating.
Because of the performance requirements of this particular brake pad, no changes are pending.
The Da-Cromet grains/lines will not influence the performance of the braking system or
contribute to any noise condition. The rotors should not be cut to eliminate this appearance of
the rotor.

So it seems that opinion says that this is a normal thing for the disks to need to be resurfaced, and certainly more cost effective...

Good. Thanks guys!

Why not just slap some new pads in there? How thick are they? Does "all grooved up" mean there was metal to metal contact? Are the surfaces fairly smooth?

Rick, I have no idea what he means exactly...that is just what he told me. But I will most likely just end up getting new pads and resurfacing the disks, since I don't really have money to throw away right now! Thanks!

I was really fishing for a response from the list on resurfacing rotors. There is alot of debate about whether resurfacing the rotors is a waste of time and money. just putting in new pads is alot quicker.

Resurfacing rotors is always a good idea when replacing pads. If you are a leadfoot then it's an even better idea. It promotes proper pad seating. I know my rotors sometimes get glazed over from very aggressive on ramp/off ramp behaviour and cutting them can sometimes remove that surface quality.

You should see brakes from showroom stock cars! New pads and rotors after every race event. They look like crap when done and no metal to metal contact.

The only time you dont need to resurface the rotors is when you replace the pads with the same type that wore out. Unless of course they are warped.

Why? Aren't they both going to wear away anyway?

I dont understand "Aren't they both going to wear away anyway?"

Using a different pad material on the rotor without turning it can cause strange problems depending on how compatible the material is. You could end up with uneven deposits of material (vibration) among other things.

Learn from my mistake, don't buy cheap brake pads (WearEver Silver, etc.). I put these on my girlfriend's 200SX and 3,000 miles later I was replacing the pads and rotors. These WearEver Silver's were too hard for her rotors and only lasted 3 months. It was the oddest thing I've ever seen, it looked like the metallic flakes in the brake pads bonded together to create hard spots in the pad. This caused them to groove the rotors beyond resurfacing. Funny thing is, they never made a sound until they had tore the rotors to shreds. I thought if this happened it would be a gradual thing, not so.

Tomorrow I'm sending the pads and rotors to WearEver to have tests done to see if they'll replace the rotors their pads tore up. Not only did they tear up the rotors, they tore up themselves. There were even nasty grooves and holes in the brake pads, strange. You can get bad batch of anything, rather it be thermostats, brakes, etc., and I think this is what happened. 3 out of the 4 pads were grooved, had holes in them, and had chunks of shiny metal sticking out of them. All this and the new crap pads never lost any thickness.

No, my girlfriend doesn't drive like an idiot so I know she didn't overheat and crystallize the pads. We live and drive on flat roads.

My question, what the heck happened to those brake pads?
