Jon said that the tmic is what is really holding the car back from being on par with sti numbers

Could be, I know with the Perrin OTS Stage 1 map I am running, I dyno'd at ~269whp and ~287wtq with 93 octane.

Either way, the WRX is a great car again. Even in the early years the WRX was pretty much on part with the STI when it came to power.

It seems that a VF52 would work well on a legacy GT for about 300 whp, at a fraction of the cost of a POS AVO 380 and spool faster!

Apparently AEM is saying thier's is supposed to be fine without a tune, buuuuttt I doubt it. On the OS side, they are creating tunes for K & N and AEM CAI.

Paid $24,900 for mine. SPT exhaust and rear bumper protector. Dealer didn't even know they had the car.

I wonder if an STI TMIC off the 07+ would fit on our cars.

Not even close to the same intercooler. So the answer is no.

I just installed a Perrin top mount on mine ( the05+ Legacy GT one), and a tune for it will follow shortly. Then a separate tune for the K&N drop in filter(a change has been noted).

Future tunes may include the addition of one range colder plugs, and then a Cobb catback

These tunes are going in an order, to show the difference of the additions, and to have Surgeline Tuning maps available for all bolt on applications for the stock turbo.

Surgeline is also looking for other 09 WRX's to use for info.

Thanks,
Mike

I am really curious what the perrin tmic will add...

Does the larger tmic only allow higher boost which in turns equals to more power?

Also anyone else have any other ideas for basic bolt ons which would go well with a tmic before a tune? For me this is going to be next year but just wondering...

Turbo inlet hose. Not cheap, though.

Thought you liked the AVO turbos Jon, at least you used.

"NOW for the avo.............

I like this turbo on an automatic quite a bit
this car had 850cc inj and avo pump AVO V1 tmic ( i believe)
and a stock airbox...

i have to say this turbo is quite efficient
i only tuned to 17.5 psi because thats what the owner wanted

Some things i noticed:

I could run leaner than the 18g by .5 afr
i could run more timing than the 18g
and it DIDNT creep on the road

i saw 4.84V on the maf on the stock box on the HWY @16.5 psi
330 g/sec of airflow. I saw loads in the 3.61 area as well and over 3 @ redline
also the INJ DC% was 70% :-p

Last but not least the car HAULED ASS

IMHO this is a SICK turbo for an auto LGT WITH FUEL
or stock fuel with a pump @ least "

He posted that thread on 11/22/06. Two years ago. Maybe his experiences with the turbo since then have changed his mind.

As has been covered in many other threads, not all intakes are created equal. Many will change the AFRs and timing in a significant enough way to warrant a tune. Remember that changing the effective MAF reading changes the measured load, which changes both fueling and timing.

The first purchase made, before any intake, downpipe, or other physical mod should be an AP. Just an AP alone will make more additional power, and even more if you then throw in additional parts.

Funny enough, I was on the dyno with Tim, and I bet that adding the K&N panel filter to Mike's 09 WRX would make no difference. Tim bet that it would. I popped it in, and sure enough, we were off by about .4AFRs (leaner). After pushing things a bit, the turbo was able to hold slightly higher boost at redline. I was surprised.

I have tuned a few of the new AEM intakes, and they leaned the car our significantly. I liked the layout of the AEM one, but you have to couple that with a tune.

The AVO is a bigger turbo. It spools later, and makes more power uptop. This VF52 is still a great upgrade, especially when you consider how it compares against the TD04. If you want more high end power, the AVO works better.
