Default bolt unstuck

ground it to oblivion with my new dremel... so, after a 28 hour delay, I am back on track...

My weekend trip to PA got aborted around Culpeper today. Sounds like the left rear wheel bearing(s) is almost shot. The further I drove the louder it got, so I turned around. I couldn't even drown out the noise with the radio... I made it back home, thankfully.

Question. Is Cole's Imports still in business? I drove past there the other day, and there's another name on the sign.

Thanks, I'll do that. But now you have me worried. Am I going to be replacing wheel bearings forever and ever now, or do you just wear them out racing??

ding ding ding! winner! track is hard on the 5x100 hubs and bearings. that's why he switched to 5x114's in the front. i don't understand the exact mechanics of it though.

What do I win? Never mind...don't answer that.
The 5x114's probably have beefier bearings, I'm guessing.

So you're running 5X114 and 5X100... did you order your wheels that way or hustle on NASIOC until it was so?

Na, you'll be fine. I wore them out from autox and racing.

Size matters here. The 5x100 hubs are smaller thus send heat through faster.

Yep. That's the reason I only run Rota DPTs. They're dual drilled so I can still swap any wheel to any corner.

I'm still a little concerned that I have to be replacing wheel bearings at +80,000 miles. Guess I'll see what happens.

I agree...very smart.

Wheel bearings arent a huge do it yourself nightmare either. You could probably do them if you had some spare time. Generally you dont just buy new bearings, you buy a whole new hub assembly with the bearings already installed. Makes life much easier. Autozone type stores will also let you borrow the axle nut socket for free. You just put down a $20 deposit and then yo get the money back when you return it....Which reminds me I think I still have theirs-- oops.....

Well, Bob's replaced the right front bearing today. The car no longer wanders and handles tons better. I also don't hear any noise from up front now, but there's still a noisy bearing somewhere in the middle/rear of the car. It's not a wheel bearing because they checked all four corners, so I guess it's either the driveshaft carrier bearing or something in the rearend. I'm sorta betting on the carrier bearing since the noise doesn't vary much with torque, but it does with suspension movement. I'm thinkin' it might be the result of a certain garage in Barboursville not tightening the driveshaft bearing carrier bolts last year after my clutch was replaced.

I thought I read somewhere that the '04 STi has the bearing pressed onto the spindle...or am I hallucinating? In any event, the bearing cost $88, so it must be made of titanium or something similar.

And you really should take that socket back and get your $20...

Could be, Richy. After driving to work this morning, I'm still undecided as to what the noise is. Things are a lot quieter now with the new front bearing, and the car handles a lot better.

That's just your trunk monkey singing...

Okay, so who owns the nice-sounding black '07 (?) STi with catback, license plate NASSSTI and a Reynolds Subaru emblem on the back? He was behind me on Rio Road, blew by me when the road opened up, then hauled tail on 29. Never could catch him in traffic. Well, I could have...if I had been more awake.

had a good run of karting last night. 3 races. all with a fastest lap of 28.1. only .1 off the leader.

the karts are almost a full second slower in the heat than they were in the cold of december.
