Default Where to mount camera in 05 STi for autox

Where would you guys suggest I try mounting a camera in an 05 STi for an autocross event? Event organizers stress that it must be in a safe place as to not come loose an get wedged behind a brake pedal. There just does not seem to be anywhere sturdy (like a headrest crossmember) to mount a standard camera mount (not a gopro or the like). Any suggestions?

Front Windshield Lower center.. or Left side window to see hands...up to you...what view do you enjoy watching>>> that would transpire to where you put the camera....
sidenote: make sure your mount is secure.

I like to put it either outside on the rear driverside window close to the B pillar, aiming right at the a/c vent it shows driver input as well as the front left to see how close to cones Im getting. Or inside on the rear passenger window looking forward. It gets more of driver input and really shows the full effect of slides and such. With the inside view I use a centr mounted roof car and ovrlap them on videos.

I like the rear driver side window as well - the inputs are one of the most important things, and the distance to the left side cones is up there:

The best setup is two cameras blended in post-processing though That way you could see the cones on the right side of the car too.

I have GoPros. I used a cut off hockey stick that I mount to the seats using large hose clamps wrapped in vinyl hose to protect the seats. this works well for inside the car. I've never had an issue using the suction cup car mounts for other places.

do u wana use the footage as data imput? or are u using it just to show case ur runs. for data, you can put it right next to the bpillar and face it downward just a hair so you can see the suspention working along with how close you are to cones. as far as just the best views, check out some of my videos on youtube: Kwracing22 , Buttdyno can voutch for me, hes been at pretty much every event I have done recording for. lol i use tons of diffrent angels to make my videos. But honestly the best camera for the job is the Hero2 with wifi remote. my next challenge is to get a my old gopro in the wheel well so see all the components working.

You definately have some of the best autox vids. Ive hung my gopro from the rear bumper looking at the rear suspension its pretty awesome and you see a lot of things otherwise overlooked.

thanks for all the input so far guys. I should have made it more clear that I do not have a gopro or contour type camera. I will be mounting my canon dslr and will not be mounting it outside of the vehicle. I just picked up a ram mount and will most likely be mounting it to the inside of the rear passenger window. And no, this footage will not be analyzed, this is just to showcase how bad of a driver I am.

well in that case be careful, because the Dslr is gona be way heaver especially under all the lateral and bumping around. Alos depending on your lens choice if you are using a lens with a plastic or lower quality mounting bracket you could break or bend the bracket with all the bumpiness. In some case i have seen it actually break the "lock in" bracket on the dslr. This is why i havent done this yet lol Im looking into buying a t2i just as a camera body to put in special situations such as right after a cone on course or on the outside of the car. Im not willing to put my 60D out there just yet lol

yeah, I was worried about that but then I found this:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ASPH48/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
thing seems very sturdy and I will obviously give it some good stress tests before I mount my camera. It even holds a ten pound weight in the picture! So it's gotta be good, right?

I would stay away from that and look into more serious mounts for a DSLR, i would go with a 2 or more suction cup mount rig. Check out this website. http://www.filmtools.com/delkin-fat-...era-mount.html
let me know what you think. also what Dslr do you have? i paid 1100$ for my camera with kit lens, idk if i would trust all that with a 30$ mount if you catch my drift.

I have a canon t2i. You are right, I am skeptical. But I will most certainly test run it before I actually mount anything I don't want broken to it. I wil also look into the mounts you suggested for these types of applications in the future. Thanks!

Dude, original Go Pros are pretty cheap. I would save up for one of those way before I put a $1000 camera on a mount in a car.

I use those mounts both for my ContourHD and my AIM Solo. I don't know if I would use my T3i on it though. I use the longer 5" arm and do the passenger side rear window location (recline passenger seat) to get this view:

Thanks dwomp, unfortunately the even is this saturday and I would not receive it in time. I have other, smaller, less expensive point and shoot cameras that I can mount. I just wanted the best video quality possible. However, if you would still like to sell it in a few weeks I would happily purchase it from you.

I'm lazy, so I just used the sticky mount and stuck it to the center light. Gives a great view and it is sturdy enough - never came loose for me.

Thank you, fellow cheap person.

I've been contemplating a way to mount my GoPro between the front seats for the best angle possible, and no wind noise. Else, it's the bottom of the driver's side rear door glass 99% of the time.

Op just letting you know that I blew my turbo today. My short lived auto x season has ended before it began. But I did beat the pants off the vette and the boss 302. Not a total loss and they can't say I wasn't driving my heart out.
