Default 06 Outback Sport noise at 4000-4500 rpm

When the engine is around 4100 rpm, I hear a noise coming from under the hood. This noise is most noticeable when I'm on the highway and using 4th gear. The noise is also present in other gears too if the rpms is also 4100. If I rev the engine while the car is parked, I can barely hear the noise above the other sounds.

The noise begins around 4000 rpm, peaks at 4100 rpm, and gradually becomes inaudible by 4500 rpm.

To me, the noise sounds like a rattle. My friend says it sounds like air rushing past an open tube or popping air bubbles inside a liquid container.

Any idea what this could be? Should I check the intake hoses?

check over on RS25 PERIOD com (i'm too new to post URL links!) in the transmission section, there's a thread over there on this subject. it may be on here as well, not sure.

Anyway, yes a few people have mentioned the buzzing/rattling sound between 4,100 - 4,500 rpm in the 06 2.5i 5sp, myself included. The guy who started the thread on rs25 has been to the dealer and is having some stuff looked into, the dealer is going to replace the cluthc & flywheel I believe. Check the thread, he's keeping us up to date with the dealer info.

Search for "2.5i" in the warranty section.

After reading the thread, I was able to make the rattling go away by pulling the shifter slightly towards me (4th gear) or pushing it away from me (3rd gear). This confirms the rattling comes from the shifter and its linkages.
