![]() I have an '03 OBS and my dealer told me I need to get an oil change after the first 1000 miles. I asked him why, and he can't seem to put together an explanation for me. Does anyone know if this is true, or does he just want me to give him some more money? Thanks.

![]() Subaru doesn't recommend it, but I did it anyway- the first miles on the motor will be the hardest- when all the freshly-assembled parts start working together for a long time. It can't hurt, that's for sure.

![]() It could hurt if the initial oil that the manufacturer put in the car has additives to aid in the break in process. Not saying that Subaru does this, but people on this board have suggested Subarus (and others) do. I waited until 3k miles, changed to synth at 10k.

![]() Paul is right. Infact SOA recommends the first oil change occurs after 3,750 miles... yes i called them. And then the second at 7500 miles. I would change to full synthetic after those two periods... which would be 15000 miles.

![]() Hahaha... One of the two most common questions asked on i-club. "When should I do my first oil change?" "When should I switch to synthetic?"
There are as many answers as there are i-club members. Really. I've seen answers to the first question from "immediately", "600", "1000", "3000" to "3750. Answer to the second is even more varied, with addition answers like "5000", "7500", "10K", "never", etc... So, it's basically pointless to ask, unfortunately. ![]() -Ray |

![]() If you are worry about your oil, get it tested.
I got mine tested at Blackstone lab and the result will tell you how your engine is doing. If anyone wants to see the report on my engine, let me know. I will find a way to host the pdf file they send me. |

![]() Our dealership offers a 1000 mi service for free to new owners for the metal shavings, and also to make sure everything is breaking in properly, belts are right tensions, fluids are right colors, tires properly inflated, and so on. Also helps many non-car nuts get into the habit of servicing their car. At least that's how a salesman like me explains it!

![]() I too changed my oil after the first 1000 miles. I am pretty sure the dealer did it free of charge or it was part of my extended service contract.
Karl, if you could post the results of your oil analysis, I would definatly be interested in seeing them. At how many miles did you have this done? |

![]() 1000 is too early, 1500 is a better first oil change mileage.
Now this is very important....if you are braking in your engine by not revving above 4k rpms then get the first oil change at 3000. I got my first oil change at 1500 miles but I was high revving the engine frequently. That oil still came out perfectly clean. There is no reason to change the oil soon if you are gentle with the car. It is very important to break in the engine by either driving gently for 1000 miles then getting oil change at 3000 or driving hard from the beginning and getting oil change at 1500 miles. |
