Clutch problems, need help
I have a 98 2.5 RS with 80,000 miles on it. I got the car in March, then the clutch pedal was firm from the top to the floor. Over the past 3 weeks or so I started noticing the clutch pedal started to feel softer near the top. On Saturday I was driving the car and the clutch went to the floor and stayed there. I was able to get the car to my friends house.
So I figured either the master or slave cylinder went bad. So I replaced both today and that didn't fix anything. The clutch has no resistance for the top half of travel, then it gets firm, at this point there is a squeeking noise. I'm not sure if this is from the new slave cylinder or the pressure plate. Also when bleeding the clutch, no matter how much I bleed it there always seems to be air in the line. I am using a vacuum bleeder. I checked the line from the master to slave cynlinder for leaks, and it checked out fine. So my question is, what is broken on my car? Is the pressure plate bad? Do I just need to power bleed it? Or what else could it be? Thanks

hey I'm having the exact same problem on my 98 legacy GT with 112k miles. I just got it back from having work done, they replaced the master cylinder and replaced the fluid but suggested that the slave cylinder be replaced soon. I adjusted the pedal engage point slightly from under the dash on my car, just to get it so that the pedal doesn't have to be pryed back up off the floor each time I shift. the only problem with doing that is it makes your clutch engage almost at the end of its stroke. I'm really interested to hear what you find out and if you can determine just what is causing the problem. I ended up spending $335 just changing out the master cylinder and doing fluid, the slave is the next to get changed if I don't come up with any new options soon. good luck, and I hope your repairs are less expensive.

Thanks, I'll check the master cylinder seals. Even though it is brand new.
