I almost bought one to test fit and see how much fender rolling I'd need to fit the 245s on my legacy. But I passed and bought some Brembos instead

AFAIK he still has the whole set, for cheap.

hmm I have all the pre-turbo GrimmSpeed stuff and did not notice slower spool...

sadly, they changed the turbo layout so its not a bolt-on for older WRX. i'm not sure what type your injectors are, but i already have a walboro ready to go in whenever its needed.

There's a lot of hard data, i.e. dyno plots, that disagree entirely with this statement. Is it possible? sure, but for most of us on near-stock 2.5L's PnPing the stock headers (which are the same ones used on the half-liter smaller motors) shows improvements across the power band with faster spool.
Under the right conditions, anything is possible. One case-report of reduced spool and power or one write up doesn't mean that that is always the case. And in that case, an expensive aftermarket header would probably also reduce spool.

People, especialy on these forums, are always trying to simplfy physics waaayyy too much. This part does X, that part does Y, is not real world. sorry. The best way to do any of this is talk to the man who will be tuning your car, see what they like, come up with a plan of attack that fits your car and your budget that that particular tuner has had good results with.

I'd like a VF34, but i'm not sure how long this motor would last with the extra power. I've been trolling the boards for a cheap, PnP stocker(TD04) for the extra quick spool-up. It should work very nicely with my exhaust setup.

probably, if i hadn't run it low on oil once to the point it shut off

its a little noisier now, but no rod knock. i'm just wary of pushing it too hard. it survived STPR like a champ.

So true! Forums are great for learning and notorious for providing far too much know-it-all misinformation. For those wanting no bias (from tuners and shops that sell services/parts to the manufacturers, and to the forum junkies that say 'these are the parts I run and the ARE the best'...) I say hit your local bookstore and spend an hour reading about turbo manifold design. I know for me, this was an eye opening experience, because everything I knew about header design was based on n/a cars and goes right out the window when you start talking pressurized systems. Maximum flow is not a priority, the most efficient containment and transfer of enery (in the form of pressure, heat, sound, etc.) from engine to turbine is.

who knew that posting that I wanted headers would wake this thread up so much!! haha. but its nice. I will have plenty of real world data soon..and since Ipiece meal every thing I will have dyno sheets from stage 2 pro-tune>stage 2 + fmic>stage 2+fmic and headers..then 1.5xtr and tgv deletes!!

And just wanted to say hey to Killer b..I am friends with Wil Whitten so I am in your neck of the woods a good bit and need to check out your stuff..I know you dont offer a ewg option and just wondered if you planned to or dont specifically because its not needed. I've been planning to go ewg and plumb it back into the exhaust because I have read that it helps spool and tuning but if its a waste or not worth the expense I may not bother.

Compression check time how's it doing for oil consumption?

if its going to die, its going to die. not wasting time on a compression check since it won't help or hurt anything.

the only oil i lose is through the leaky turbo seals until the oil gets too dirty, then it drinks it. i lose less than a quart per 3k change.

Found it:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2271466

Although the thread is about 18g-xt vs xtr there is some great info in the middle about GS header design.

Here is MP's most poignant point:

It is an extremely ignorant belief that Subaru can not develop a header for a car that has good flow characteristics. Port/gasket matching the manifold is BAD. The steps are put there on purpose. Do people really think Subaru couldn't cast a header where the flanges are closer to the header diameter? yes, some people do and it's ridiculous. There are tons of cast parts on the car that are made to exacting tolerances and the manifold is as well.

The reason:
The firing order of the boxer 4 (1-3-2-4) and the way they have one bank of cylinders come together before meeting up with the other side requires the exhaust to be tuned more like 4 single cylinder engines. This requires large steps at certain points to make a pressure wave reflect back off the closed exhaust valve and then back out to the pipe. This gives you a low pressure at the exhaust valve when it opens providing you with some cylinder scavenging. Eliminating the large steps in the header (that you may notice always go from small to big starting at the head) eliminates the pressure wave and kills the effect. You now get more pressure at the exhaust valve when it opens and you pollute the engine with exhaust gas, extra chamber heat and a poor cylinder charge.
A properly designed header will have a merge collector where all four cylinders come together at the same point to allow the cylinder to actually be in time. OR, it will have the front and rear cylinders go to the same point because they are in time with each other.

Can you make more power with a ported header? It's possible if the header has become a choke point and removing material has only increased the peak flow capacity of the header.
Will you lose spool? Almost every time.
Will it affect gas mileage? Negatively every time
Is it worth it? No, not really. Get a real header that helps scavenging, spool and power.

On a 2.5L, any aftermarket header that isn't a complete piece of crap will give faster spool, more power and better mileage. For example, on my RS with a 35R I went from the GS header/x pipe combo to an unequal length header and picked up 40whp at the same boost and spooled over 250 rpm faster. This is typical to gain about 10% power and faster spool by ditching the factory ported header. From bone stock OEM header to aftermarket it's about 8% with better spool.

the proper way to port a factory header would be to only open the inlet sides of all the pipes without trumpeting them. Then open the outlet portion the same amount to maintain a step and still increase overall cross section. This provides you with less flow restriction and maintains the principals that the header was designed around. The thing is that you have to port the WHOLE runner, not just the inch or two around the gasket. To know how much you can get away with will have to be calculated/tested and there are programs to help with that.
Very informative. I spoke with Rallysportdirect and some Cobb tuners and they both agreed, and had experienced similar problems. It made me rethink buying the GS set-up and instead going with the Tomei headers and up-pipe as I will eventually be doing a hybrid set-up...that is once this new 18gXT destroys something on my engine or transmission.

I miss the C-ville. Cheers.

Hahaha, yeah that was a blast. How'd that shortcut through Outback parking lot work out for ya?!?! JK, you guys caught me, I had some bad luck at Fo Lake South light.

Who was the 3rd guy in the bugeye? I've seen him on the 29 commute a couple times.

It didn't work so well, obviously. I can usually beat traffic by making that shortcut, but I misjudged the light at 29 this morning, and I had to wait for slow traffic coming into the shopping center from the other light. I refuse to get my picture taken by that photo camera, particularly when you have to roll past the sensor to see traffic coming north, thus tripping the damn thing.

The bugeye was none other than Dave, aka Smurftastic.

Hey Stil-

Would you mind finding me one of these dyno plots showing isolated improvement with the GrimmSpeed set-up? As a result of MPS above post I quoted a new thread was started by another member about the GS PNP/XP combo. No one was ever able to come up with such a plot. If you could dig one up I'd love to put it on that other thread, and a lot of guys would really appreciate it.
