Default knocking noise?

Theres a knocking noise coming from my car. It sounds like it's coming from the timing belt area or front of the car. Any ideas? It does it at idle or going down the road.

Does the knock change with RPM?

Does the knock continue when the car warms up (this may not be a great thing to test if you do have a real problem, but many subaru's have a weird cold noises)?

yeh, it does it if the car is warm or cold. It sounds more like a rattle than a knock. It sounds like something is hitting the plastic timing belt cover? Oil level is fine

it's not a constant knocking noise, like every so often while at idle it will knock once and the knock doesn't change much when driving

Your timing belt idlers/pullies are worn. go get your teming belt changed and have them replace the idlers as well. My 03 was rebuilt at 77K and my timing belt idlers/pullies were THRASHED.

I think my car is like yours...it knocks from time to time. Scared the carp outta me when I first heard it. But, I have driven the car over 1k miles and the sound is still intermittant. I'm thinking that I have a lose heat shield???

If the bearing did go out, would the car stall or could it still be driven? Would it drive ok for a short while and then slowly get worse and worse? I have seen many posts diagnosing the problem, but I haven't seen if people are driving on it and don't know it's a problem until - Kablewy!!!

If the timing belt goes, the car won't be drivable and you'll likely have some major damage to the valvetrain. So, if you think the idlers are bad, I'd get them fixed pretty soon.

may be the MAF sensor? they tend to drift and not throw a code. You may want to replace that?
