![]() whenever I turn my Impreza off, the muffler makes a weird burbling noise, kind of like it's farting (that's the best noise explanation that was given to me) this also happens when the engine is reved (happens at the end of the rev). It's a MY96 still with the stock exhaust- the dealer put one of those cheesy decoritive tips on the end too. Is this normal? Could it be the tip? Can it easily be fixed? Please help- I don't want my Impreza farting (it really sounds gross) - thanks

![]() Does it smell a little funny too, kinda like sulfer? You might smell this after hard accelleration or just normal driving. You might be running a little rich, and gas in your exaust could do something funny like that (I think)

![]() I always fill it with "premium" octane- usually from Shell or Mobile gas stations. I've tried other octanes before and the noise remained, I got the car used from a dealer and it made that sound the day I first brought it home. Do you think an adjustment to the idle could solve the problem?

![]() Well, first off, there's really no need to put premium octane fuel in your car. It is really intended for high-compression or forced-induction (turbo) engines, which yours is not. Regular unleaded (87 octane) should be fine.
If the car is running rich, then it is adding too much fuel or not getting enough air into the cyllinders. Some of the fuel is not being burned in the engine, and is instead burning in the exhaust system. Some things to try: Change the air filter. Check the spark plugs to make sure they are all in good working order. If the car has over 60K miles, make sure the timing belt has been replaced. Check to make sure there are no leaks in your exhaust system (this could actually be hazardous to your healt!). Check the oxygen sensor. That's about all I can think of right now. Jordan |

![]() thanks for the info- timing belt was changed last week along with the air filter (k&n put in). I'll check for leaks tonight after work- oxygen sensor was checked when the timing belt was done and that's fine.
