Wrong. What’s actually pointless is having a third row eating up cargo space when it never gets used (or even worse, being constantly folded down which is a clear indication it’s unneeded).

A person with four kids in car seats might need a 3rd row. Most other people don’t as sales suggests.

While this is true regarding the 3rd row, with the 3rd row seats folded down, it still has more cargo capacity than 5 passenger CUV's. I have used my 3rd row a handful of times but the extra cargo capacity is used much more. I have loaded up my Santa Fe with 5 people and ski/snowboard gear/coolers/etc. Plus it has a standard V6 for the extra power.

The Ascent wasn't around yet and H6 Outback wasn't great. Plus the Outback cost as much as what I paid for my Santa Fe.

Or its folded down for said cargo space and the purchaser wanting a vehicle that has a higher tow rating... ahem Outback XT cannot match.

Needing a higher tow rating seems like a good reason to buy the Ascent. However, if a vestigial 3rd row is better than a second one, why stop there? They should offer a 4th row and 5th row to the market as well. Given the increased usability, I'm sure it will sell super well.

Lots of us have been saying it for years, but I'll repeat it: Subaru needs a minivan. Just imagine the possibilities! FOUR rows. TWENTY cupholders. TWO sliding doors. THREE rear-facing baby seats.

It would be pure family insanity.

If you can't fit 4 rear facing child seats next to each other in every row (including the driver's seat) it's not good enough. Forget about sporty and practical turbo fun cars. What the world needs is MOAR HUGE SUVs!

I'll entertain a Subaru minivan with 8.7 inches of ground clearance. I'll convert it to a camper minivan.

They should. Stomp Honda and Toyota in one fail swoop.

They also need a compact truck as that segment is the biggest (trucks) in the USA. They could also sell it to the Aussies, etc.

Why stop at 5k? Give it four ascent engines and a rating of 20k.

I am. At its price point the interior and CVT transmission is not up to snuff in the $40k price range much like the Chevy Blazer that's also not a $40k vehicle. It's selling okay but it's by far the worst value vehicle in Subaru's lineup as the Outback and Forester are considerably better value.

Dumb idea. Minivans are another collapsed segment and hyper-competitive on top of that. No room for new entrants in the minivan market.

Minivan would have been a smarter move than the Ascent. There's more competition in the crossover space and an AWD minivan with 8.7 inches of ground clearance would have actually distinguished itself from the competition.

Family of 4 with a 3 row. Was a requirement for our most recent car purchase. Pointless? I think not. When the in laws are in town, we can now actually pick them up from the airport in 1 vehicle. When our oldest wants to bring a friend (or two or three) along somewhere, we can take one car, instead of two.

The ascent is a decent car. I liked it, until I put the transmission in drive and hit the gas pedal. It was an almost instantaneous "nope, we're going back to the toyota dealer". The cvt has seemingly gotten worse since our '14 outback. Maybe more capable, but I can't stand the way it drives with its stupid fake shifts. Cant hold a candle against the 8speed auto in the highlander.

I really have a hard time accepting the CVT hate in favor of traditional automatics. I just never liked the feel of automatics, but I instantly felt at home with the CVT. Even in the Ascent. It's not the best, because of the fake shifts as you mentioned, but fake shifts vs actual shifts are moot to me, I don't like feeling the shifts. It's unfortunate that consumers have watered down what a CVT is supposed to be by requesting fake shifts just to "have that old thing back". I don't think I'll ever understand.
