Default Opinion - Do teens think they have to be rich nowadays?

I was talking with my dad last night and my half-sister (dad same, mom diff) is almost 14. She's a really good kid but my dad said that ever since they moved to a nicer neighborhood she's been influenced by the idea that she has to have the nicest stuff, etc. Not nice like mall nice, but nice like Rodeo Drive nice.

I was thinking about it last night, and I started to realize with all of the shows, etc. geared to this idea (Teh OC, Paris/Nicole, some show I thought was a reality show on MTV about rich kids, Nick/Jessica, etc. etc. etc.) it seems like it is no wonder that kids today think that they should live like millionaires.

I know when I was growing up I didn't want "generic" clothes, but I also didn't expect to have anything I wanted, and my dad would've laughed if I had said that I wanted a shirt ordered from some store in Beverly Hills for $100.

Advertisers know where their bread is buttered. Your sister is part of the next generation of big spenders. They're priming her to buy craploads of shizzle she doesn't need.

I throw up a little every time I see a high school girl carrying a coach or vuitton purse. I also throw up when I see them in those ruffle skirts. Ugh.

Go to any medium-sized suburb and EVERYONE (it seems) has new Beemers and Benz's and houses are gargantuan. I'm an NOT in a wealthy area but there isn't a new house being built that's less than $400K and, when people move in, a shiny Lexus will be in the driveway. I'm sorry, there aren't that many people with that much money. People leverage themselves to the hilt to keep up with appearances. I wish I could have realized this a long time ago - for a time, I tried to keep up when I had nowhere near the means to. Now I realize the people I wanted to keep up with, were just keeping up, too.

i get pissed at my aunt who has bought 2 new cars for my cousins..not top of hte line, but still new. A suzuki rodea and a vw beetle. They are not rich, and they have had to get a loan for each car, but she felt they had to have new cars. i wanted to kic her and say "do you realize my first car i had to bang on the starter with a hammer to make it start?!" AND i had to buy it!

they are only a few years younger than me.

Teenage (18-19) girls in ruffled skirts don't seem all that puke-inducing to me

I moved and don't have internet access yet. Try to pay attention.

You don't find it repulsive because of that pink pole of man chicken attached to your pelvis. I find it slightly disturbing when I see a girl walk into Starbucks wearing a skirt that definitely doesn't follow the below-the-fingertip rule, followed closely by the 12/13 year old boy she's babysitting/tutoring who has the glazed over look on his face of someone that a)had a full frontal lobotomy or 2: caught a panty shot upon exiting her 16th birthday present 325i.

the middle class as we've known it in the past several decades, is quickly disappearing. while it's all a big party for corporations and advertisers right now, i wonder what's going to happen when everyone is $100K in debt to creditors (not including their house), and is unable to buy the latest cheesy wares TV/radio/internet/etc. are telling them they need. i guess credit card companies will just keep extending lines of credit to people, but alas...

kids are spoiled nowadays. parents want to get their kids everything they didnt have but they forget that kids dont need that crap. i used to work with this girl who got her kid(2 at the time) air jordan sneekers for about $75. i always thought that was a good idea because the kid obviuosly needs them for basketball and status and he will never ever grow out of them

Jebus you should hang around my area, the rich kids from the upper class burbs here (san fernando valley, LA - porter ranch) are @#[email protected]!#$ annoying little @#[email protected]#s. Their parent have major cash and they still dress like people older then them did back in the 80s, trashed up jeans, band shirts. But, they drive new beemers and crap.

I have a friend, who is a teacher, always complains about this, that some of his students are driving cars that cost more than he makes in a year...

My blood boiled last week when I was watching MTV's "My Super Sweet 16" (don't ask). The chick came from divorced parents of Middle Eastern decent (not that is has anything to do with it), and was the most spoiled beotch I have ever seen. She demanded a H2, because the Benzes were too small. She flew to Paris to get her dress for her party, and threw a hissy fit because Prada and Dior and the rest of the designer stores were closed for August; so she had to get two custom dresses made. The best was at the end she was thanking her parents for the party AS her dad was writing the check to the party coordinator....the grand total....$200,000; but that was including the H2 of course.

EDIT: beat me...but I was typing out my disgust

I only caught the end of it so my disgust did not build. Had I seen it all though I would be very angry.

My girlfriend is the same way and I grew up in a high-income area so I guess I was sort of the same way...now that I'm getting older and am learning the real value of money I'm straying far away from it.
