Default Learning Gear Ratio and Final Drive Ratio

Fellow tranny gurus,
Can you guys point me to a place where I can learn about what do all those numbers mean? And how they are translated to torque and top speed?

My main confusion is by having a lower/closer gear ratio suppose to give me more torque at lower speed? Or it's the other way around. For FD ratio, I have seen people talking about how 4.11 works better than 3.90.

I am in the process of rebuilding my 03 WRX stock tranny (2nd and 3rd broken teeth). I am thinking to go with "sti v6 cryco RA gearset", and then I don't know which gear ratio I should get, the closer gear ratio or keep the stock gear ratio?? My question is how much stronger is cryco than non-cryco set? A fellow nasioc member is selling sti v6 RA set for $1395 shipped (non-cryco treated), should I go for it? Where are some places I can get gearsets? I am also thinking just upgrade 1-4, still keep stock 5th gear.

I don't care about speed tops off at 150mph or whatever I will never attempt to go that fast. I would like some more low end torque and maintain smooth shifting. By the way, it will mainly be in-town driving, so 5th gear high way cruising at high RPM is also not a concern.
