Default Calling All 97-99 LGT 2.5 N/A mpg thread

like title says, i just want to hear what others are getting for mpg. i know there are many factors that will +/- mpg but what i do i reset the lower odometer, fill up til click. drive for say 250 miles or until low then fill. amount fill will be divided into about traveled. say 250 on tank, 10 gal to fill up=25mpg roughly. that being said tire pressure, mileage of car/engine, altitude, etc is also a factor. just need rough est. of what people are getting. to the point, my engine has 186k on it. got 25.5mpg today.

I have a 99 BD with 115,000 and have horrible gas mileage....i have a rebuilt DOHC with polished heads and engine work, short ram intake but im using the stock box, borla header and vibrant muffler...i used alittle over 3/4 of a tank from torrington to norwood mass. thats horrible. my stromung HFC and non resonated midpipe will be here tomorw so will see if that makes a difference....they say 9% increase in fuel economy with the HFC and borla header

98 GT wagon w/ DOHC EJ25. 5spd, 205/55/16 tires running 35/34 psi (front/rear). Car is on 98,345miles, had the HG's done at 45k.
I usually drive about 5 miles for a commute, never going above 40mph. I will sit most of the time in 3rd or 4th gear, puttering along.
STi axle-back & 2.25" midpipe, snorkusectomy, 5w30 Castrol Syntec oil.
Redline cocktail for transmission & diffs.

I get 24-26mpg.

Fuel milage is affected by driving styles and the type of driving you do.

I did get a solid 29/30 MPG driving out west through Indiana and Ohio - doing 65 MPG with the cruise control on. Had I dropped down to 60, maybe I could have done better.

In normal driving, these cars really prefer to run much harder so its not that strange to only get mid twenties.

I've got really poor gas mileage ever since the price on gas went up.

Mixed driving - generally around 21-22mpg. Typical 80mph highway driving - about 25mpg. Best ever highway driving - about 27mpg. Worst mileage - about 10mpg at VIR.

My mileage does not seem to have changed appreciably from stock to significantly modified (full exhaust, Cobb heads and cams, CAI, light flywheel, etc) back to nearly stock.

32? What??

I am getting the 20-24 range. Last fillup was 20-21. My 'commute' is a 5 minute drive to the train station, so thats just terrible for mileage. Other driving is to the store - less than 5 minutes. Sometimes on the weekends I go highway, which brings that mileage above 20mpg. I need to do a tuneup.

seems that it's all over the board. my last fill up last night came to 7.8 gallons in, 214 miles on odometer which comes out to be roughly 27mpg. i do 50/50 city/hwy. btw i have a outback transmission, would that affect it at all and 40 series tires on 17's. at roughly 60 mpg i'm hitting close to 3k rpm.

You're spinning about 10% higher RPMs in 5th with the Outback transmission compared to the stock 2.5GT transmission. 5th gear is the only difference between the two. I didn't notice any (significant) change in fuel mileage when I went to the Outback 5th gear, but logically you're spinning more RPMs so you're using more fuel to go the same speed.

As for "40 series tires", that really doesn't mean anything. 215/40? 175/40? 275/40?

In Oregon, we now have 10% ethanol gasoline by law (regular only, turbo owners don't have to feel all butt-hurt over this like us NA people do), so milage sucks. And my car pings like crazy if it's over 60*F out.

Not the whole state YET, but it is coming soon. i haven't noticed too much of a change though, to be honest...

If I still had a 2.5 I'd add my mileage...

No, it's not just you. You have shorter tires, which effectively changes your gear ratios. It will make the car feel quicker because you've effectively made your 4.11:1 axle ratio into a 4.36:1 ratio. It also means your speedometer and odometer are thrown off, so Lord only knows what your actual gas mileage is. Your odometer thinks you've gone farther than you really have, because to go a given distance your wheels have to turn more than they would if you had the correct size tires on the car. Why in the world are you running tires that are so small?

And my point was that you initially said "I have ... 40 series tires on 17s". "40 series" does not, by itself, tell one anything about the size of the tire or it's rolling diameter, hence my comment.

If it's pinging like crazy then you need to check your knock sensor. A modern car should never ping if the ECU is working properly.

Good point. I noticed that it's pulled timing back like crazy too... I do know it does not ping at all with plus gasoline in the tank. >_< The pinging goes away after hard driving, as does my stumble problem. This motors probably on it's way out, grrr.

1999 2.5 4EAT 77k miles. Running 205/70/15's at 40psi. SPT axle back and Cosmo Racing SRI. Where I live I have to travel down a mountain, into a valley, and back up a mountain...whether I'm going home or going to work. Right around 21.5 mpg.
