Is there a difference between the two models below? From this thread, the one being used is the SC model for the WRX. Question is, I have a 2011 STi non-navi which should retain stock controls for the SC model, but would the FJ model do the same thing? I can't tell the difference physically from the two models other than the FJ being a "newer date" manufactured.

Oh man I want one of these now. I don't care for Navigation but having a nice 4.5" LCD and HD radio is nice. *drool* can't find them on the net for sale.

Join the club.....

The 86201FJ630 is the version of the the 86201SC630 that comes in the 2012+ premium model non WRX/STI Imprezas. I knwo the Forester SC630 is perfect plug and play. I wonder if the Impreza FJ630 is as well? The SC630 was avaiable on '11 MY foresters and the FJ630 only on '12 up Impreza. I have an '11 WRX. I wonder if any wiring changed between '11 and '12 WRX

Thanks ColdFyre. I was able to gather that much difference between the two. I was hoping somebody else had first hand experience on the FJ model going into a 2011+ WRX/STi.

I just found a FJ model hence the question. It's currently being shipped to me and I'm taking a gamble on it working flawlessly. Physically it looks the same, i'm just hoping the 12+ impreza had the same speaker output that my 2011 STi has (i believe 6 speakers). Along with the same steering wheel remote. Can anybody confirm those two items?

1) 2012 Impreza non WRX/STi has the same steering wheel controls as a 2011 STi with media hub
2) 2012 Impreza non WRX/STi has the same speaker setup as a 2011 STi with media hub (6 speaker setup i believe)

It doesn't matter how many speakers the impreza has. You'll get the same sound as long as the harness is the same. And the SWC should work fine.

i'll be sure to post a reply here on how it works out.

it was an eBay auction that ended this morning @ around 6am!!! ended up costing around $305 shipped.

I just set up a keyword search for both models, etc and eBay alerts me via email when something comes up.

$305 for an OEM HU with a 4.3" non-touch LCD.
I'd pay $100 top for this. I don't care how rare it is. $300 can get you a VERY nice 5"-7" touchscreen HU that might even includes Nav and sat radio. But if it's the look you're going after than I guess you gotta pay what you gotta pay.

And I can tell you that should work just as well as the SC model on a 2011 WRX from all the posts on the internet I was reading about them. Plug and play!

to each their own right? i thought about getting an aftermarket navi unit for the longest time, even bought the JDM trim piece for it still wrapped at home last year. but nowadays, i find myself using navigational software such as google and apple turn by turn more on my iphone than i would supposedly on a pioneer avic-z140bh. i also stream all my music over BT via spotify and find the current deck works well except for the following things, which lead me to buy this unit.

1) stock deck only has two line display and only shows artist OR song (not both at the same time)
2) stock deck doesn't scroll text so your'e stuck viewing the only available text on-screen.
3) i like the oem look of the red glowing lights that would effectively blend in well with the original look of the car.
4) i also like the ability to add a reverse camera eventually and this would allow me to do so.
5) its also nice to retain 100% stock controls from the steering wheel remote to the mic inputs for handsfree.

to me, spending $300 for this is not a big deal at all, and I can probably dump my current deck for $100 or so. but yeah, most people would think its a bit of money and its probably better spent towards the deck i was thinking about last year (pioneer avic), but i prefer the oem look since the rest of my car is stock anyways.

I don't know if anyone buy that piece of junk OEM standard uh for $100 lol. All the things you listed could actually be archive with a much nicer aftermarket hu at that price or even cheaper. Although as mentioned everyone has their own perspective. If I. An find one of these hd hu for around $100 I'd jump on it. It is. Nice to have that little LCD and hd radio.

just got my deck installed last night and confirmed that this model works while retaining all factory functionality and was a simple plug and play.

as simple as the deck is, i love the color display which is a step above the stock HU that came with the car.

awesome news! Do you still have to transfer over your phone contacts one by one? Or does it supports transferring your whole address book like most other modern day vehicles?

I don't know why subaru didn't make this HU a standard option on Premium WRX.

i'll check that out for you later. When I did glance it over last night, the address book was empty with the option to add contacts. I didn't explore any further than that as it "looked" like options to add single entries. i'll confirm later.

Tell me about it! I have the Limited model. For just near 30k you'd think this would be the standard radio and the Navi unit being the upgraded version.

Remember to turn off the horrible "eq" that these units come with: with "Audio Off" showing, hold down the 6 preset key, and turn the tune knob until a hidden menu shows up. Repeat this procedure once more to get to loudness on-off, and again to get to "eq" on-off.

I have been using the 2012 Impreza Limited version of this HU for a year now, and aside from the power limitations (~20 watts per channel) it has good sound quality. It is based around an NXP (used to be Philips) IC, the SAF7441 DSP (Digital Signal Processor), which has decent signal processing specifications.

Actually, I modified mine to add line-out, but that's another story...

FM sounds so much better now. I hated FM on the old deck. As for the phone book import, you can't do this without manually entering a contact one at a time. lame.

I was able to get into the secret menu pressing #6 preset but from there I couldn't do anything else. there was 3 pages of info but selecting any item in there required me to insert a usb device.

side note, i still had the search saved for these models on ebay and got a notification this morning for one. the price is rediculous though, guy wanted close to $500 total shipped. it was BIN for $475 with $15 shipping. what a rip off.

After you see the first menu (with all the internal numbers), release the 6 key. Then hold it down again, and turn the tune knob. This takes you to the loudness on-off menu.

Repeat this again to get to the third menu, which is eq on-off

Features and Differences:

Quote:
CP635U1 (printed on front)
Clarion model PF-3302B-A, Subaru P/N 86201SC630, rear sticker PR63
  • Used in 2011-2013 Foresters
  • 20-pin radio harness has CAN bus (pins 11 and 12), used for speed-sensitive volume and night illumination dimness cancellation ('NIDC')
  • 16-pin aux/mic socket also includes pins for a line-level subwoofer output and +12V amp remote turn-on
  • Black 20-pin socket for OEM accessories (typically satellite radio tuner)
  • Has single button for FM/AM, with SAT button below that
  • Compatible with OEM satellite radio tuner accessories

CM631UD (printed on front)
Clarion model PF-3391A-A, Subaru P/N 86201FJ630, rear sticker MR63
  • Used in 2012-2014 Impreza (not WRX or STI) and 2013-2014 Crosstrek
  • 20-pin radio harness no longer has CAN bus
  • Pin 11 is for "bright" mode ('NIDC'). Pin 12 is unused.
  • Pin 19 is for Vehicle Speed Signal (VSS) -- used for speed-sensitive volume, and to lock out some functions while you're moving (such as being able to adjust bass, treble, etc.).
  • 16-pin aux/mic socket does not include subwoofer output or amp turn-on
  • Black 20-pin socket for OEM accessories may or may not be present
  • Has separate buttons for FM and AM, no SAT button
  • Not compatible with OEM satellite radio tuner accessory (variation with 20-pin accessory socket will work, but with diminished capabilities -- see discussion below)

Both head units (as well as 2011-up HU models CZ624U1 and CP625U1):
  • Use same 20-pin connector and pin-out for power, speakers, illumination, steering wheel controls (SWCs), power antenna control
  • Use the same 16-pin connector for Bluetooth mic and aux input
  • Have the same additional rear sockets/connections:
    • Brown 4-pin Hirose socket for USB input
    • Pigtail lead for "tel mute" input (for external Bluetooth cell phone kit)
    • Motorola socket for AM/FM antenna
    • Ground lug for redundant ground harness

Both CP635U1 and CM631UD share these additional features, which cars with the CZ624U1 and CP625U1 do not have:
  • Has HD radio capability
  • 8-pin socket for rear camera input
  • 12-pin socket for additional "VTR" input (A/V aux in)
  • 16-pin aux/mic socket includes pins for parking brake input (pin 15) and +12V reverse gear input (pin 16)

"NIDC" allows you to have your headlights on, but restore your instruments and HU to daytime brightness (the way they would be if your headlights were off). See your car's owners manual where it talks about the dash light dimmer wheel ("Illumination Brightness Control").
To install the CM631UD in a 2011-2013 Forester; 2011-2014 WRX, STI; or 2011 Impreza (i.e., cars with CAN bus and BT SWCs):
  • I recommend not connecting the car's CAN wires to this HU. You should only need to disconnect pin 11, since the CM631UD doesn't use pin 12. It's possible that the other things on the CAN bus can tolerate this "bogus" device being connected, so it may not matter if you leave the factory wire stock.
  • Those other models don't have a wire at pin 19, so the CM631UD won't notice the lack of the VSS signal (except you won't have the speed sensitive volume feature).

Going the other way (CP635U1 into a 2012-2014 Impreza or Crosstrek):
  • Again, the HU probably won't care that you're piping the car's bright signal into one of the two CAN pins (pin 11), but it would be safer for the car to disconnect that lead on the car's harness.
  • The CP635U1's pin 19 is a no-connect, so the HU won't care that the car has the VSS signal there.

CM631UD is completely plug-and-play into a 2012-2014 Impreza (not WRX or STI) or Crosstrek that had the base HU CM621UB (without 4.3" screen). By "completely plug-and-play," I mean that the car provides all of the signals exactly as the HU wants. The car's factory 16-pin aux harness already has the parking brake and reverse gear signals (even though the CM621UB didn't use them).

To use the rear camera feature (with either the CP635U1 or CM631UD), you'll need to add an 8-pin camera harness. And when installing into a 2011 Impreza, 2011-2014 WRX or STi, or 2011-2013 Forester, you'll also need to add the 12V reverse gear signal to pin #16 on the 16-pin aux/mic harness plug. 2012-2014 Impreza and Crosstrek already have that.

Similar post comparing the models without 4.3" screen here.

trakmasterrs' eBay listing claims your CM631UD came out of a 2012 Forester, but I'm not aware of any Foresters having used that model -- I'm fairly sure all non-nav Forester HUs still have CAN bus, even through 2013. I think the seller got confused on what model the HU was removed/salvaged/stolen from.

Last edited by SVXdc; 05-16-2016 at 08:50 PM. Reason: Updated info about 20-pin expansion bus socket. 2014 Forester dropped CAN bus. Tweaked year ranges.
