Default 06-07 Hawkeye WRX in GS

Hey everyone. Thinking about running a hawkeye WRX in GS next year with the new class change.

Was wondering if anyone has experience autocrossing 06-07 WRX models. Any big things I should look out for?

Any thoughts on how competitive a Hawkeye could be?

We've got a local that just bought an 06 WRX for GS. I helped him put a 27mm front bar on and he got some BRZ wheels to give it a try in GS. Will know more once we have an event in it.

It's got a tall 2nd gear for sure. It's also got narrower wheels than most of the top GS cars at 7".

Following this thread. I just bought a 2002 WRX with a few mods already on it. I was planning on building it for STH, but with the class change, I'm thinking about knocking it down to GS if I can source stock parts to replace the aftermarket mods that are on it now.

With the mods we're allowed in street, I'm assuming a thick rear bar, good struts (I'm thinking either KYB AGX or Konis), and sticky 225s are what I should be focusing on, right?

We ran the 06 with a 27mm front bar, new RE71R's, 40PSI all around, and max front camber of -1.1 degree per side. It wasn't way off the mark, but it wasn't really where I hoped it would be. I ended up 1.6 seconds out of PAX, and about .4 back from the fastest FOST out at the Houston Region event. Plenty of competition there, and concrete surface.

Definitely need the front bar. Forget trying the rear, IMO. The springs are just too soft and the body roll is too pronounced. Even with the big bar, the car was sloshing back and forth. It's front grip limited for sure, but the camber loss from body roll was the main culprit. Here are my videos.

+1 for the front bar instead of the rear. I would try with stock bars first. The GDs are surprisingly chuckable in stock form as long as you're patient getting back onto the throttle.

The WRX wheel size for that model year is tiny at 16x6.5, but you should be able to find a wheel based off of the optional BBS.

2002-04 WRX BBS option
Size: 17x7"
Offset: +55
Bolt pattern: 5x100
Wheel Weight: 15 lbs. (forged)
OEM-equipped tire size: 215/45R17
You could also go up to an 18x7 if they are available, and even further reduce sidewall flex. 225/40/18 would be a bit pinched, but would probably work well. 225/40/17 would give you a little shorter tire than the 215/45, but might help with the tall gearing and the 2L.

13.4 WHEELS
Any type wheel may be used provided it complies with the following:
A. It is the same width as standard and as installed it does not have an offset more than ±7.00 mm (±0.275") from a standard wheel for the car.
The resultant change in track dimensions is allowed.
B. Wheel (rim) diameter may be increased or decreased 1" from the standard part. This change may be applied to the front, rear, or both axles.

How do optional wheels work? I've got a set of 2002 17x7 WRX wheels, from looking at that thread they might be the JDM version? Not entirely sure, but they're definitely WRX wheels. How do the rules grade that?

The rules are there in the post. They don't have to be the stock wheels, just the same width and +/-7mm on the offset, and you can go up or down an inch in diameter.

As long as the wheels you have are within +/-7 from et +55, they should be fine.

I know that part (and thank you for the feedback!), but the part that confuses me is that the wheels aren't technically USDM. I can't find any other parts of the "options package," and I know if you put something on the car that was optional, you need everything that came with it.

I think I'm in the clear, or I've at least done my due diligence, but I'm hoping to avoid any end-of-the-season disputes because of something minor like a slightly different wheel.

You could run any aftermarket, lighter weight wheel in that size, so just treat it the same.

Stock wheel 06-07 was 17x7" just to clarify from a post above that said 16". Of course you could runs 16" with the wheel rule. 02-05 was 16x6.5", both in the US, so choose your diameter and offset accordingly.

The 06 definitely came with 17x7 wheels. For the record, BRZ wheels do not clear the 4-pot front brakes.

The owner won the local PAX in cold, wet, and very slick conditions recently. PAX was dominated by HS, GS, DS cars. His car had a clear advantage to the other local GS drivers. Hoping for a dry day this weekend to see how the dry performance goes.
