I don't see it happening. They are a very small company and are focused on Skyactive X. And while that may yield more torque it's really more of a focus on improving MPG.

It might be possible to put the turbo 2.5 motor in the 3 but I'm not sure they will spend the resources, time, and money. The demand for performance econoboxes is pretty low.

Apparently they stated the turbo engine they have does drop right into the Mazda 3, but they have no plans for such a version.

Sounds like a dare to me.

I really like this car. Seems to be setting the bar for its segment. Waiting to see what the Skyactiv X version brings to the table in the future. Hoping this will bring success (and increased sales) to Mazda across the board as the rest of their vehicles head in this direction. Maybe that will allow them to bring back more sporting cars into their lineup.

With 247bhp the 2.5’s output falls short of the latest crop of hot hatches, but 310lb ft of torque brings its own challenges. “The Mazda 3 is a light vehicle, so if there is too much power and we keep it as front-wheel drive, there is the torque steer phenomenon happening,” he said, nominating the all-wheel drive that’s already developed for the new torsion beam rear end as an obvious solution.


Is the German limousine still a byword for luxury? We're about to find...
Beppu added that he doesn’t see any high performance Mazda 3 as a track-focused tearaway, instead suggesting the emphasis would be comfort and everyday road use. “It needs to be responsible and friendly… more friendly than a Golf GTI,” he said, though adding: “it should be fast”.

He referred to such a car as a “hyper” Mazda 3 rather than a hot hatch. It remains unclear if the brand will therefore use the MPS or Mazdaspeed branding for such a model.

But it is CO2 that is one of the biggest challenges for a hot 3, something that could challenge its European viability. The forced induction 2.5-litre engine is not currently sold in the region, and might not meet the efficiency requirements to do so.

The is clear interest from the crucial US market, however, which has its own R&D centre in Los Angeles and has reportedly created a proof-of-concept machine under the radar of the brand’s Hiroshima head office.

Mazda last sold a hot 3 with the second generation car in 2013 (above), under the MPS tag in Europe and badged as a

Pretty sure this journalist mistook the Japanese word "haipo" (short for "high powered") for "hyper".

I'd love to see the existing 2.5l turbo show up in the 3, I'd buy one immediately even if it still only came in an auto configuration. The new generation is tempting enough as-is.

Nissan has a 2.5 AWD Altima.. Last I saw they (2019) are being discounted already and not moving very well..

I think it might happen, it’s not going to be high strung MazdaSpeed

According to the report, the project hasn't been given the OK yet, but the car is still far along in development. The Mazda research and development center in Los Angeles is rumored to have built a proof-of-concept model that top executives in Japan have studied.

It's unlikely such a car would receive the Mazdaspeed name. Last November, Mazda CEO Akira Marumoto ruled out a new Mazdaspeed 3 and explained it has everything to do with the brand focusing on its more premium image.

From what we can gather, this car could instead be a premium Mazda 3 with the brand's 2.5-liter turbo-4 under the hood. The engine makes 227 horsepower (250 hp on 93-octane gasoline) and 310 pound-feet of torque in the CX-5 crossover SUV and 6 mid-size sedan. Motor Authority reached out to Mazda USA for comment and Drew Cary, senior manager for brand communications, said that a turbo model hasn't been confirmed yet.

"We encourage people to ask for it, though. Our planners and executives are watching and listening to fans," Cary added.

Beppu underscored the notion that a hotter Mazda 3 would not be a track machine, but rather something performance oriented and comfortable—friendlier even than the Golf GTI. But, "it should be fast," he added. The project manager added front-wheel drive is likely a non-starter, so expect a hotter 3 to feature the new all-wheel-drive system to channel power to all four wheels.

While we'd love to see the return of a Mazdaspeed 3, the idea of an AWD Mazda 3 GTI competitor is music to our ears. Let's hope it happens.

Considering the skyactive-X version of the 2 liter brought the power up to the level of the 2.5 skyactive-G, I think a X version of the 2.5 out putting 220-230 hp in a 3,022 lb car would hit the spot between enthusiasts and regular drivers.
