Race Gas in a stock wrx

there are no benefits. a stock engine isnt tuned to need gas that high. the engine wont ever run hard enough for the race gas to burn up, your just going to have a whack load of deposits in the engine

With a stock tune you will not get much from it.If you have a way to see if you have any detonation like a knock-link or http://www.turboxs.com/shop_prod.php?what_category=7 see knocklite it will help to run a littler higher octane rating.You will have more detonnation on hot days over 90 ect when it gets real hot.It has been here as of late i here i run Shell 93 with a octane boster like VP or Pro-blend.Brad

You'll go faster because your wallet will be much lighter.

Have the car tuned for race gas even with all the stock parts and it will surprise you. Just not very cost effective to continually run race gas when you could get a turbo back exhaust or some other part that adds power and doesnt nickel and dime you to death...

If you have access to Unleaded Race Fuel, then try a Mix of that and Supreme (90, 91, 93, 94, whatever you happen to have). However, your stock ECU can only support up to about 96 Octane (based on information found on NASIOC), past that you really won't see any benefits.

I have run a mix of 100 unleaded with 91 Octane (Got to love Crappy California Gas) to get about a 93-94 Octane. I definitely noticed a difference with the car running smoother and had more get-up and go.

Try it as a mix and see if you notice any real difference, if you do great, if not, then you are not going to be out very much. Plus it is better to run that than to run the Octane Boosters anyways.

gas is 'spensive enough... why go to the effort on a stock machine? Save your money, load it up with 93 and be happy. When you've saved enough - start on your mods...

Not EVERYONE has 93 at the pumps... including myself an fellow californians

Yeah, 100 octane unleaded makes the WRX just purr. I run it at the track so, there's no chance of detonation spinning a rod bearing. You will feel the difference though, it takes a little while for the ECU to figure out it has more head-room to work with.

Anyone who says it makes no difference either doesn't understand how a modern car with knock sensor works, hasn't tried it themselves or both.

I don't run it all the time though. Not in the WRX. That's all my Civic with 11.5:1 compression ratio sees though.

^ This is the correct answer, at least in the sti, I assume the wrx also. The ecu can take advantage of up to roughly 96 octane any more is just wasting money. If you use leaded race fuel it will quickly ruin the cat, over a long time it will also ruin the o2 sensors. If you want to slightly raise octane, E85 is cheap, just be careful as the injectors will run out of room quickly. Toluene and xylene are good octane boosters that work but their price has risen a lot in the last years making them cost prohibitive. AV gas is down right dirty, at least at our local airport, only in a pinch would I run it. Data logging software is cheap, (free), only the cable costs, buy a cable and log the results for yourself.
