On the flocked dome light? Just some lint and such from me agitating the roof liner. There is some, very minimal, gray showing around the buttons where I didn't take the flocking far enough into the recesses between the button and housing. Again, this was my first attempt at flocking and I may flock further down to cover up the blemish. Certainly not the materials fault though. You can see here I flocked down the sides of the button thinking that would be sufficient but I should have done the same to the adjacent surface of the houseing:

I'm working on repairing the sun rotting on the top edge of the door panels, I'll have pictures soon. More flocking and suede on the way... For now though, flocked window switches to cover up that wood trim stuff and window decals! I gotta say the yellow decals over blue interior is striking

PS - Keep in mind, work in progress pictures.

I left this image full resolution so you can see the brilliance of how good the flocking looks in direct sunlight:

Here is a quick photolog of doing the suede on a small piece for those that are interested:

I wanted to do the door handle while I had the panel off for the vinyl repair so...

Handle removed:

Scrap section of suede fitted perfectly to this piece:

Spray on adhesive applied to the handle and suede wrapped around the to-be-seen side:

Excess trimmed off:

Spray on adhesive applied to back side and the suede that will be folded over (effectively sprayed on both materials for maximum adhesion) and pulled tight over the back side of handle:

Using a razor blade I trimmed out the hole for the plug. Reinstalled:

In total, with taking pictures, took about 10 minutes.

More progress on the project. I was able to remove and flock the dashboard today and will be installing it with new seats I'm picking up tomorrow.

Removing trim pieces:

Dashboard out:

Wires protected from flocking:

Airbag flocked:

Makeshift flocking booth on back patio:

Partial shot of the dashboard:

I'll have more pictures of the flocked dash and install tomorrow. Off topic but I repainted the wheels, I think they turned out perfect for rattle cans:

I hope to have adjustable suspension someday but I don't know that there are any adjustable enough to go between "street" and "rally" setups. I'll probably need 2 sets of struts.

Quick update. Seats acquired. Dashboard installed. Went on a 4 hour road trip down to Phoenix to pick up the seats with the dashboard installed and I've gotta say the results are awesome. I love the black on blue color schemes and the best part is there is absolutely zero glare now. I was concerned that the shiny/sparkly black complexion of the flocking would be reflective but even in direct sunlight I am hard pressed to notice any detail of the dashboard in the windshield. It's hard to get lighting such that my camera doesn't saturate the blue when focusing the black but here are a few shots until I figure out the lighting.

Quick side note though: on their instructions they say the adhesive has a 10-15 minute workable range but I had never really tested the time on this before starting on something as big as the dashboard. In Arizona I would say you have more of a 3-5 minute workable range because of the dryness and higher temperatures. I had myself and a friend applying the adhesive and I started applying the flocking roughly 5 minutes after we started and some spots were already too dry to accept flocking and it became a psycho rush of me reapplying adhesive in certain areas to recover the project as you can only do this once and not in sections. This was certainly nerve racking but the results turned out better than I expected. There were some light spots but they are difficult to notice. Odd thing about flocking is it looks 20x better in direct sunlight than otherwise. So if you live in a dry/hot area... do this in a garage, run a humidifier and do this at night while it's cool out. Have at least 2 people applying adhesive and a third person delivering the flocking as immediately after the adhesive as practical. Anywho... Pictures:

You should redo the areas you have in blue, and change them to charcoal or grey to match those seats. With a blue/yellow exterior you are aiming for, the interior will be overkill and become ricey. Blue is a good accent, it is not a good base for the interior. The blue looks almost cartoonish if used excessively...

I sorta agree with you sooch. The suede was inexpensive and I will likely change things up when I start to use alcantara in the near future. I love my Subaru! Repainted hood coming soon.

Finished repairing the upper edge of the door panels and repainted the hood. I know the color of the hood looks goofy with the black but I wanted to see what it would be like with the rally blue/yellow on an Outback. As you can see the hood was very sun faded, had millions of cracks and several dings down to the bare metal. At the least I needed to reseal the hood and 10$ of rattle cans goes a long ways.

Damage to the top edge:

Using a razor I cut a clean line back far enough to remove the damaged vinyl:

Using a razor, scotch pads and alcohol I removed the remainder of the foam padding and any residual oil/dirt as well as removed the window seal strip (~8 tabs to bend and one rivet pulls out with pliers). Surface prep is everything!

Foam padding acquired from Jo'Annes. I was told the material is typically used for padding inside quilts and can be "ironed on" to other materials. I forget what the material is called but it is very closely the same thickness as the vinyl. 1/2 yard was about $6. Trimmed to size and bonded with 3M Super 77 spray adhesive.

Suede with a red stitching hem line (my first time sewing with a sewing machine). Again, bonded with 3M 77. The wrinkles at the forward edge will be covered by the tweeter speaker triangle cover.

Night came before I could get finished shots in daylight, which I'll post tomorrow.

The hood you can see before, wip, and after shots here. Wet sanded with 220 grit, Primed 2 coats, 4 coats blue/yellow, single clear coat, wet sanded with 1000 grit, 2 clear coats. As I said before, this is experimental, not the finished product, but you can't go wrong with gaining the experience, I'm happy with the results for rattlecans:

I promised to share final shots of the repaired door panel, also some general pictures of the overall interior.

As ridiculous as this looks. This is a pretty cool project.

Yeah, it's being done in a weird order and it doesn't quite match, but i like it. I'm thinking about doing some of this stuff and this seems to be a great place for a beginner like me to watch it get done and see whats involved.

Keep up the good work

Ya, it's definitely odd as it is. But she's a daily driver while being redone as I don't have a second car for a dd to put this in the shop and hammer it all out at once. I'm just having fun with it and sharing with the Subaru community. At the end of the day all that really matters is how big of a smile your car puts on your face and in that regard she's perfect.

I like the center console a lot. The rest seems a little much in my opinion but the quality of work is great. But it's your car and if you enjoy it that's all that matters! Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the input guys, it means a lot. I've been considering going with charcoal/black for the interior but I like how much the blue stands out. It's difficult to convey with pictures but the interior has a warm and inviting atmosphere that I like. The interior is nearly done and I will begin to work more on the exterior soon. Some last things are new audio system, wheel, proper shift boot and floor mats.

Soon I will start to work more on the exterior. Roof rack, HID lighting, fogs and brush guard before I do the full teardown and rebuild with paint sometime in 2013.

Small progress update. She's driving great, about to hit 220,000 miles. I love the blue hood, but she's due for a wash. I recently installed LED interior dome lights from www.v-leds.com and they work GREAT. For only 18$ for all 3 overhead lights this may be the best bang for buck I've spent so far on this project. Some small things to be installed over the next few days:

It's hard to see but there are Rally Armor yellow decals to add and the classic RA keychain. The next big piece fell into my lap a little earlier than I was expecting. As I plan to do a EJ257 swap and repaint the whole car professionally I will need an in-between daily driver while she is in pieces. So I picked this up for $500 last week. 97 Impreza 2.2 that drives great. More pictures of the newest member to our family soon.

I also need some feedback on the design concept I'm working towards. I'm planning on 1 or 2 light bars as rally/fog lights, one on roof rack and one on front bumper (http://www.v-leds.com/Universal-LED/...82501-3-1.html). Along with 4x area lights for the perimeter (http://www.v-leds.com/Universal-LED/...76647-3-1.html). You can see a concept of the lighting and a custom hood I intend to build down the road (functional, not just show):

Trying to decide which way to go with her so I need a little feedback. Soon she will be torn down to nothing for a complete repainting/restoration and during this process I would like to swap in a new powerplant. She's going to be heavier and I don't believe the ej25, with 230k miles, is up to the task. Problem is I love NA. I have an 04 WRX and don't get me wrong I love the power, but I hate the lag. All in I would appreciate what the expected cost and practicality of a few different ideas is:

Rebuild the ej25 with higher compression heads, racing flywheel/crank/pistons/connecting rods/cam and get the most out of the 2.5 while keeping her NA.
OR
Find a totaled STI and swap in the powerplant/wiring harness/drivetrain/transmission/suspension
OR
EZ30/EZ36/EG33 swap.

The last option is likely the most labor intensive, which I don't mind, so long as it's doable. I've read around and found some have the EG33 swap completed with great results but it is heavier and more difficult to fit into the engine bay. The EZ36 would be a dream swap for me. Power, torque, NA. I have read that some have attempted this swap and have had issues working around the immobilizer and limp home functions as well as no ecu capable of running the AVCS. Have any aftermarket ECUs finally been able to capture this function? Would swapping in the harness from a 3.6r outback be possible to retain the AVCS? I also don't know how I feel about drive by wire throttle as I prefer the direct response and control of a cable. I would love to build a chopped down and simplified EZ36 that retains the AVCS, perhaps with a manual control of its cam position.

Ideas?

Are you totally in love with the body style?

I think best bet would be cut your loses, sell that thing, get a loan and buy a wrx wagon. It seems as if you have done a lot of DIY that someone might be a fan of. I think the current style profile is forced, gaudy and that you would grow out of it quickly. Just my opinion after spending mucho money polishing my turd.

Nah, there's not a snowballs chance in hell I would ever part with this car. I've been through too much with her. She's kept going when everything rational said she should have died on me when I needed her most. She took care of me more times than I can count and the least I can do is return the favor. This Outback is way more than just a car to me. I have other Subarus (97 2.2 Impreza and 04 WRX Wagon) I could dump money into but none of them have this kind of bond with me. I appreciate the input but wont happen

Small update, found a McIntosh stereo and amp at a local salvage yard out of a 2001 Outback. 10$ and 3 hours later...

So I guess I'll have to rename the thread as she's not blue anymore (inside anyways). I took the suggestion to change the suede to a charcoal grey and so far I like the results a lot. The reason behind the blue was to match a set of WRB STi seats that I was looking for but since I picked up a set of 09 STi seats which are grey leather/alcantara with red STI stitching I'm toying with changing over to this color. I also can't find more of the blue suede at Joann's. Just a test with the door panel:

Matches the seats nicely. I'll wrap the top edge of the door panel soon as well.
