Default Double DIN DVD w/ Nav [Compliments & Complaints] Add yours here!

The Four main ones seem to be (ill add more if people list them)

[1]Kenwood DDX with navigation added.
[2]Pioneer AVIC-D1
[3]Eclipse AVN 5435
[4]Eclipse AVN 5495

Please list your complaints and / or praise of the system from PERSONAL experiance, I'd like to perserve as much truth as possible.

for example..

[+]AVN 5495 has an 30 GB HD built it, (10 used for Navigation / 20 for personal use) in which you can record music (live recording off Sirius Radio or from a CD)

[-]with the AVIC-D1 you can not play regular DVDs unless you add an external DVD player of somekind (no other way around this!).

[-]And from personal experiance I know that the AVIC-N1 (not double DIN) can NOT play DVD-Rs with mp3s burned on them, even though it would be an incredible function, espcially because the AVIC can navigate folders as well as files.

Some Areas To Consider
-Sound Quality
-Asthetics (the Headunit [HU] itself / the menu screens /quality of picture)
-Speed (how quickly does the HU boot up and load menu screens..etc)
-Features (Ipod Control / Sirius or XM Radio / Steering wheel control /etc)
-Navigation Quality
-Reliability / Warrenty
-Misc.

thanks for your help everyone

with the AVIC-D1 you can not play regular DVDs unless you add an external DVD player of somekind. Also it only has one slot, so you'd have to change the Navigation DVD in and out with a music CD to listen to it, although the NAV feature works for ~5 miles.
Actually that is incorrect. it has 2 slots on it according to pioneer

This is a great thread though, I want a Nav/DVD/iPod hookup for when my new STi comes in. Great idea might even make sticky

I would recommend the Kenwood. No IPOD on the eclipse. Separate nav for Kenwood, but you only change it once a year at the most. I had the option of any of them at a great price and I bought the Kenwood.

The D1 has XM NavTraffic and a Vehicle Dynamics Display (Voltage, Clock, Direction, Slope, Acceleration, Side Acceleration, Angular Velocity). As stated before, the big disadvantage is that it can't play DVD's without a separate player/changer.

adding a DVD player to the d1 is not that a big of a deal you can stash it under a seat or in the glove box and you can get a decent external dvd player for like 50 bucks

Just installed the AVN5435 on Monday. So far I'm happy with it except the installer couldn't find the VSS so the Navigation is only ok....it still shows the route, etc but no visual or vocal warnings of upcoming turns, etc...Once I can find the VSS then I will have him fix it.

Also, I have had a Sirius PNP for 2 years. The AVN5435 with Sirius tuner does not do the following:

- no song seek
- no what's playing on other streams
- no list of streams in each category

I do love that it fit in absolutely perfect with my interior and looks like a stock radio (hopefully will reduce theft probability).

I may have more comments after I've driven with it for a few weeks.

You can also tell Pioneer that it is not that hard to have one of the two disc slots they provided to play DVD's...

Or just get a Bluetooth GPS & software to go with your Treo 650 smartphone; that way, you've got GPS nav with you even outside the car. 1GB SD cards are under $50 these days, so it's practical to fit map data on them now.

i just found this out today...major plus.

[+]ESN Security: This unit incorporates the Eclipse Security Network. You can register one of the music CDs in your collection as the "key" CD which unlocks the security. If the registered CD is not detected, the navigation and audio functions will be disabled when the unit is disconnected from and reconnected to the vehicle's battery. You can turn the security on or off, or change the "key" CD as desired.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
AVN 5435.. im assuming the AVN 5495 would have this as well.

hopefully theives know this feature and try and steal something else that has no feature like this... like the AVIC or something. and even if it is stolen, it does the theif no good. so its win / win.

The AVN5495 uses a memory stick for it's security network. The stick comes with the AVN5495 and can be used for other things like uploading MP3s, etc

the avn 5435 has 2 disc slots, obviously it'll let you play DVDs and listen to CDs at the same time right?

anything else that you found out about the avn 5435 that you love / hate?

Im kinda leaning towards the Avic-D1 right now simply because of the fact that is has the NAVtraffic which I think will be avaliable for most navigation systems in the future, but I belive it would be a wonderful feature to have because the navigation is the main reason id want it, of course not having a DVD player is still the single biggest thing going against the D1..

i've been toying with the idea of getting a D1. how important is dvd movie playback to people? i can't imagine a time when i would want to watch a movie on a small screen while sitting in a car. i guess its a nice sounding idea but is it something people really use? if so, when?

another positive for the d1, i think its quite a bit cheaper than the other solutions suggested in this thread.

there are no other double DIN navi options that do not include DVD besides the Pioneer.

I want navigation only, why do people want to watch DVDs in their cars?!?! I dont want to have to pay for that, but its a shame I have only 1 choice.

I agree, when I had the Avic-N1 in my car, I thought id be using the DVD function all the time.. (when bored waiting for friends / kill time / etc etc) but it turned out I used it the LEAST, in fact I used it like once or twice at most... but it has the coolestness factor when you're sitting around bored with some friends waiting for someone to get off work or something. Pop in a comedy or something and everyone is entertained for a while. and it never gets old to hear the "WHOA! YOU HAVE A AVIC-N1 IN YOUR CAR! THATS SO COOL!" its always that quick ego boost!

A lot of things in life you dont NEED at all, but we'd all like to have. the same can be said about a lot of things in your life. Do you NEED 227 / 300 HP ? no... but we do it because its what we love. Do you need a giant house with a million rooms that you'll never use? Do you need all the clothes you have? etc etc...

I thought I'd use the navigation the LEAST because i mean hell, I know where Im driving on the way to work or somewhere else, but it was still an awesome option to have, watching yourself on a map or finding alternative ways to get places (avoiding highways, tollways, what not) and being able to ALWAYS get home by simply click "HOME" and having it link you with directions straight there. Whoever thought of the concept of navigation in the car, is absolutly brillant!

Unforunatly I never get that but oh well.I think the avic sound quality is sacrificed big time.I've had pioneer head unit that sounded great but the avic is just ok.And I have the right amp setup too.

There's some much better solutions coming in January at CES - Now is not the time to look at this sort of product.

Anyways, just get the Clarion NICE and have NAV in every car you sit your 'bum' in.

Part of the the problems with the Pioneer sound quality is the fact it doesn't have a DVD player built-in.

Pioneer's standard CD players have a pretty low-quality 1-bit DA convertor. Their pre-amp section is already less than desired.

DVD players have 24-bit d/a convertors to read the higher bit data. This is why the detail on the Kenwood and the Eclipse is better.

Eclipse has 24-bit DA's on just their high-end CD players too. Pioneer does on their DVD flip-out screens. Even these, however, don't sound very good except the AVHP7500DVD. Kenwood uses 24-bit Burr-Brown D/A's on their DVD players. Same brand of D/A's found in Denon, Nakamichi, and the Alpine F#1 status.
