Question Borla? Any Good?

Hey Everyone
Just wondering if anyone had any comment on the Borla headers and there cat. back system. I'm thinking of getting both and I was wondering if I could get some info about them.
Thanks
Matt

I don't know about the Borla catback... I think it's only a 2" system. Myself & others have gone with a universal Borla Turbo in 2.25" with custom 2.25" catback piping instead.

I have the cat-back. It is only 2" piping. It's all stainless, it's high flow and very loud. Better performance than stock. Looks good on the car too. There are some issues with the hangers though. If you do a search in this forum for both the headers and the cat back, you'll find a wealth of info.

As far as being good, all Borla products are warranted for one million miles. I have heard the early design of the headers used to crack, but apparently they remedied this in the newer design.

I have this setup. I bought it for three reasons:

1) Warranty
2) Sound
3) Matched

The first hasn't been tested. The second is absolutely great. It sounds like a sports car...not a car with a muffler thrown on. It's a great sound, one that doesn't kill the boxer whirr but makes the car sound great.

I guess my headers muffle the car, because it is much less noisy than my old 5Zigen catback.

Basically...the whole system is 2" and it's matched. That's what brings me to my 3rd point...it's as close as you're going to get to a complete system with the POS stock cats on there.

My only issue has been with the flanges. They don't seem to fit properly. I'm using electrical tape, but if you go out and thrash your car around like I do, the hangers will slide back and forth and one of them may slip out. The system won't go anywhere-it'll just hang "tilted." Very ghetto.

Don't know how to remedy this yet...maybe some clamps...

Thumbs up

I have a Borla Header and a 5Zigen Fireball CatBack and my 2000 RS gets up on its feet and sprints when I run it hard from 500-6200 RPMs. 3rd gear, which has always been my favorite is, is exploding with usable power. The Borla's fit requires chopping up the bottom of the fan's frame, which is not what I expected, but the results make you forget about that part. You should make sure that the first Oxygen Sensor stays really hot. The bigger and longer piping of the Borla manifold cools down the exhaust gas and causes the Oxygen sensor to throw the Check Engine light. Nothing but love for the 5Zigen before and after the Header.

Overtime, the answer to you hanger problem is 3/4" shaft collars. I got them at my local hardware store. I just put one on each of the outer rear hangers and Loc-tited the set screws in the collars. No problem since. I don't have a digital camera or I'd post a pic.

Subie Gal, I know you've got the ScoobySport exhaust so I'm guessing you are interested in the headers. I don't have them, so I don't know much about them.

As for the Borla being only 2", it is still a noticeable improvement over stock at the high end even with the stock exhaust manifold and a K&N panel filter.

Cool

No Check Engine light. I didn't even go through with getting them coated or wrapped either, I just couldn't wait. I live in sunny Fort Lauderdale where its Summer already. It was in the mid 80's today, so I guess keeping the O2 sensor hot is not really a problem down here. Oh yeah, I know how bad it is to race on the streets but I had to see what the RS is capable of now. I ran against a '97 Eclipse GS with headwork, cams, intake, sprockets, and high compression pistons, thats what he said. Stock Exhaust. We got a red and I did my thing, he rolled a full car length in front of me before the light even changed, but I laughed when his wheels spun and I jumped across the intersection. He was in my rearview all the way. I took third to red and dropped off after. I was amazed at the acceleration the RS acheived. Its not just a good looking car anymore.
