Suggestions on Buildling my motor ( Pistons & Rods )
Hey Guys,
It's time to build my motor I currently rock a 07 2.5 STi Motor. These days what really bothers me are the Cast Pistons. I've been talking around to different shops and everyone has different opinions. Motor Mods to buy ( Suggestions Please) Gates Timing Belt ACL Bearings Race series kit 08 STI Oil pump All for Combo Price $300 Covert Performance Oil Pickup $125 Spark plugs $40 Gates Water pump $60 CP Forged Pistons & Rings Should I Coat them? Eagle Connecting Rods Combo price $775 or should I get Manley H-Beam Rods Total of $ 1305 Do I really need? ARP Head studs $190.00 ARP Main Bolts / Block Bolts $350 Tomei Timing Belt Guide $45 Not that I'm Cheap I just believe that OEM is usually the better choice for reliability! I want the car to be able to tuned to the just below the max at 21 PSI Then I want to be able to beat the piss out of it every time I get in the car.. Because thats how i like to drive. My Commutes are short and spirited. I have friends with SL65 Blacks, and Lambos, I know I wont be beating them at all. But I would like to scare them for a second off the line! Plus i can take my car off road! My mods are as follows. 20G-TD05 Turbo APS RAM Intake APS DR725 Front Mount Intercooler APS turbo inlet Pipe Syncronic BOV Recirc'd 800 cc Modded Injectors Flow tested Walbor High Flow Fuel Pump HKS Dp with Cat Grimmspeed Up Pipe with EWG 38MM Tial Wastegate with 1lb Spring Plummed back after the Cat MadDad Midpipe Prodrive Oval tip UK spec (2) STI High Level Bar Coolant Cap Hydra EMS Nemesis 2.6 Hydra EMS Wideband 02 Sensor & AutoTune STI Motor Mounts With a 6sp Tranny of course! Waiting to be installed HydraMist With all of this and my goal is to have a really fun car to daily drive and track days once in a while. What Pistons & Rods are going to do the job without blowing a ton of money but not cheeping out. Thanks, Chuck III

You should also replace the timing belt tensioner, add ARP headstuds, and have the heads+block resurfaced. Now would also be a good time to replace the oil pickup tube.

Yeah Oil Pickup tube is important to me .. I'm really curious to see how mine looks.
That is another thing in my daily life i feel is ready to fail and cost me more then I bargain for. |

Nix the ARP case bolts unless you are going to get the mains align honed. Nearly twice the torque of the stock bolts distorts the mains and makes this necessary.
Balance the OEM rotating assembly for revs over 7.5k -soobaviator |

-- 05 and 35k miles on the block.
-- Yes I plan on having it send out and balanced possibly honed if need be. I really just want to make it a great DD with a HPDE once a month. With no issues! |

Used STI crank up 0-$180 depending on the actual condition. If you are to be an honest seller you will measure the bearing diameters so the buyer can know ahead of time what he's getting into. It's easy enough to spend over $300 polishing and balancing a used crank. You can buy a new STI crank for that much. EJ257 cases $200-$500 depending on the condition. Entire short block with 35K miles on it. $500-$800 but it's a crap shoot though. People have different motivations and purposes for buying. Personally I would buy a short block and tear it down and therefore looking to go as low ball as possible on the price. Someone else may want to run it as is and be willing to pay a higher price... -soobaviator |

Confused, I'm going with new rods & pistons. I got the 2nd block for the purpose of building up and then I'll sell the one in my car with honestly less then 10k miles.
But just broke a ring land the other day when i saw smoke coming out of my exhaust. So now I plan on putting all my cards on the table at once. Taking the advice of the RealStreet on what block looks good and moving forward. Most likely they look very much the same. The one i don't use will be sold to the highest bidder per say! I wouldn't sell anything unless it was worthy of selling. I dont have this good of a feedback for being a scammer! Chandy69 |
