You might want to clarify this info. The conditioner is only for certain 1999-2002 Phase II 2.5 engines that are susceptible to external coolant leaks from the head gasket. The conditioner should not be used under any other circumstances.

You might want to re-read that first post again, where he includes an image from an updated 2004 Impreza Service Manual (MSA5T0410A) which recommends the cooling system conditioner be used whenever the coolant is replaced. That manual is applicable to all 2004 Impreza variants including the WRX and STi.

Default Drain plugs...

Okay specialists,

Are there coolant drain plugs on each bank of cylinders to drain coolant from the block? All water cooled engines I've worked on have had at least one (in-line engine) or two (v-engine). Good question?

This link shows you where they are located. There are 2, one on each forward side of the motor for each bank.

Thanks so much for that information. I think that aspect of the coolant change if over-looked quite a bit. From the link, it seems not much more drains out of there though. I'll see what happens when I get there (now I know where).

Well, I'm not a specialist, but here's a diagram that shows the block plugs on a normally aspirated EJ engine.

This question also suggests some others that ought to be covered by any thread that presumes to call itself the "Cooling System FAQ" in the Service & Maintenance forum.

How do I drain my coolant?

How do I refill my coolant so I don't have any air pockets?

Here's a start on those answers, with a Subaru document (see p. 4):

Just as an FYI:

My Honda S2000 uses Honda Type II Long Life coolant. It's an extended life, silicate free coolant made for use in aluminum engines such as the S2000's.

I plan to flush the WRX and use this as a replacement when I hit 30,000 miles.

Honda sells the Type II Long Life in 1 gallong jugs, and it comes pre-mixed (50/50).

Why would deionized water be better than distilled?

You might even see better heat removal capability if there is a coolant additive mixed with it. Obviously, plain water should only be used in racing only applications and only by advanced users. Its use in a normal passenger car is NOT recommended even for short use.
Just to explain a little more, water has a very high heat capacity. The reason it is mixed with ethylene or propylene glycol is to lower the freezing point below 32F and raise the boiling point above 212F. Both water and ethylene or propylene glycol are essential to the coolant's function.

Depending on which of the 9000 websites you believe, deionized water is purer than distilled. More pure = better. As with many of my "facts", there is controversy on this issue with an associated high geek factor that I don't even want to go into. Even though it's "better" I have no clue in the world where anyone would go to get deionized water though. I did find it online @ $30/gallon, so I would assume that 99% of readers will just "settle" for distilled.

deinonized water takes out all the elements/ions (hints the name) from the water leaving only pure water. I guess all of the ions collect heat or just don't leave contaminates.
*factoid* you can't be electricuted in deionized water

What about the 2002-3 WRX? Does Subaru recommend using this conditioner for these years as well? Anybody done this? Do you pour it in first, last? How much is in the bottle?

I just got finished doing a flush.. and refill of OEM Subaru Coolant. I have an 03 and decided to put in the conditioner that subaru is now recommending. The bottle is pretty tiny and I put it in after the coolant was full.

This thread talks about it in depth, but basically, if your car is 1999+, you need the conditioner. Add it first, last, or in the middle as it doesn't matter. It is $1.39. This thread talks more about the conditioner specifically.

Did they change the oem part number for the coolant? I just went and bought a gallon of undiluted antifreeze from my local dealer, and the invoice says:

"SOA635002 Floor Coolant"

There are two part numbers actually, one for the qt. size and one for the gallon size. I will add them to the main post and thanks for reminding me about this....I forgot to add it a week or so ago when I found out about the two part numbers.

Aha. So then it looks like the stealer billed me for (4) quarts rather than (1) gallon for the sole purpose of jacking up the price. Sounds about right for Subaru.

This is a great thread!!

Just in time for me to change the fluids

Any special precautions to take when changing out the radiator, also? I plan on going with one of Speed Monkee's.

There is no air bleed screw. This link will help you get any trapped air out.
