On another note, you really have to give the folks at Boeing some props for building a vessel that you can slam into the ground at 150 mph and remain largely intact.

Also...

Yes, I would say that hurtling ass-over-tea kettle in a flaming tube would be cause for "concern."

And having very few casualities.

On a prior note, I would certainly grab my backpack while exiting the plane. Would take an extra 1 second and my backpack usually has everything I need to survive...in a city for a few nights

Since my backpack is normally at my feet, I would grab it too.

But if anyone stopped to grab something from the overhead, they deserve a door of dicks.

FO. What are their initials? Its a pretty small base so there's a pretty good chance I know them.

I agree with this. My backpack has frickin' everything and then some. Leaving it behind to let the contents be destroyed seems a bit stupid if taking it doesn't add any time to the escape (it's at my feet, no overhead nonsense).

[Stefon] This backpack has EVERYthing... passport, external hard drives, laptop, overnight gear, stilts, throw-up music, an albino that looks like Susan Powter, Teddy Graham people... [/Stefon]

I would too as my backpack has my meds in it. While I can see that they don't want people grabbing luggage, I'm going to take the extra second to make sure I don't have to go worrying about needing meds and not having them.

Critical meds you will need within the next 30 minutes, sure. Anything else, no f***ing way. If everyone takes that extra "second", that's another 20-40 seconds longer for the last people to get off the plane--which very well could be life or death for a number of people.

There's a difference between going around because your conditions were not right and not performing at your job. Perhaps the disgruntled ex-pilots are just being disgruntled.
There have been instances were perfectly nice vfr days and people go around multiple times. As controllers we really don't ask why your going around. As long as it isn't a emergency. We might ask if everything is okay.

WAT? do you even fly? Picking up your backpack and standing up is basically one motion.

20-40 seconds longer? You are assuming that there is a clear path?

My deplane skills are serious business, I can exit in the time it takes most people to take off their seatbelts and stand up.

I'm not talking about snagging my Tylenol on the way out in case I have a headache. This is more of a "without my meds things aren't going to go well for me".

Regularly. If my laptop is stored securely under the seat--as it should be at landing--yes, it absolutely WILL take longer than just leaving it behind, even if just a small amount. Also, look at the pictures of the cabin. ANYTHING you have on your back, over your shoulder, or in your hands will be a liability in exiting. It's just not worth it unless it's a medical necessity.

Let's say you have to wait an extra second for a space to open up where you and your backpack can fit into the aisle. Multiply that if everyone grabs the bag at their feet, and it could be a life/death difference for the people at the back, just like Asinine said before.

I agree with this, too, thus agreeing that my idea of bringing my backpack is a complete dick move - certainly other peoples' lives are more important than my stuff and that is really the bottom line. If actually faced with the situation, and because I have reasonable frontal lobes and I'm not a jerk, I'd like to think I'd pay no attention to my stuff, and instead would help facilitate a quick evacuation.

However, because we're still talking about it - assume you're in a window seat and thus can't get up immediately anyway. While you're calmly waiting for your turn to GTFO, is it okay to grab your bag from between your feet? **okay the few posts above clearly explain why it isn't! Fair enough!**

Hopefully none of us will never find out.
