Isn't it also partially because when the car is idling at a standstill, it's not calculating the mpg (which would be 0, and not --.- as it shows on the display) or factoring it in when showing the average mpg?
I always go by the miles traveled and fuel pumped (and always filling up completely) to calculate mpg... not that I have a choice, since my Evo IX doesn't have an mpg display. But that Fuelly website/Gas Tracker app helps show those stats now. |

My LGT wagon was about .5 to 1.5 mpg too high compared to trip odometer/pump calculations. In addition, the speedometer was about 1 mph too high at 60-70 mph, based on gps navigation readings. So not only the mpg calculations were off, the odometer was thinking I was going further than I was actually going.
With my first replacement tires, I up rated the size a bit and the speedometer and gps reading matched. The calculated mpg rating was still off but I just factored that it was 1.5 mpg too high and got the real rating. I was still getting 23-24 real mpg in everyday driving in a 325hp modded wagon which I appreciated much more now considering my current DD gets 15 mpg on a good tank. |

^ This guy knows what's up. Just don't use anything other than the miles traveled, and you'll get a pretty precise figure.
It's funny when you go on Corolla, Fit, etc. forums and they're saying, "Yeah, my car averaged 40 mpg, it's so economical." |
