How much are you spending on the STi axleback? (The stock one I assume?)
If it is free or almost free then I'd go to a muffler shop to get them to make a mid-pipe.
You dont need a resonator. Just extra money to cancel out minimal sound, unless its some huge thing.
If you have to spend any amount of money that is close to bolt ons, to get any of this done; I would just buy one made to bolt on to your car.
In case you are wondering the STi AB will not bolt up to your stock mid. (Flange issues). If you already knew that, then disreguard.

you will not hear anything at all. it will sound exactly the same as your stock muffler.

uh...Do you speak from experience?

How about I speak from first hand experience. I had an STi muffler on my car with WRX midpipe (modified) and Borla headers. It sounded amazing for such a cheap set up. Before the STi muffler I had a WRX muffler and it sounded good as well.

$60 sounds like a decent deal. Go for it.

No, thats completely wrong. I have a posted sound clip floating around here of when I had the STi exhaust on my ride. It sounds suprisingly good for another car's stock exhaust. I say do it. I liked mine a lot.

I have that, but without the borla headers...

Its only a little louder than stock. Not much at all really. I am curious now what it would sound like with borlas... I had borlas with a 2" midpipe and WRX muffler on my old 1.8 and it sounded louder than what I have now, a little too loud actually, so I wonder what the WRX midpipe makes it sound like...

i have an STI muffler welded to a 2.25" pipe to the cat.

it's nice but don't think it'll give you the feel, sound, or power of a sports aftermarket exhaust. you get a bit more tone and probably just a little more response, but it's not like a world of difference. sometimes i forget about it even.

Wrong answer. It's definately louder than the stock RS item. It's not loud and it doesn't sound like a tuner exhaust. You want the resonator to cut the drone. Even with a resonator (I have the whole STi exhaust from the first cat back) this system drones a little on a wagon.

Why don't WRX and other turbo members not try to answer questions about the NA models... he answers are rarely the same.

Anyway.... I am about to do this sort of thing... I will first have the STI cat back with STI muffler... then I will also have a second STI axle back minus the muffler (I am fully aware this will be loud) then I will have both options with the Borlas and Random tech cat.... I obtained a complete STI cat back and an extra axle back to do this with... my version of have a "tunable" muffler...

Once I get the stuff done, I will post sound clips on my webstie and link them here for those that are curious.

Sorry for all the questions.

Cheers and a big thanks!

No. At the time that was with NO resonator and no borla headers.

With the resonator (WRX) and without headers, its quieter than that... I can actually hear my de-snorkeled intake more than the exhaust.

It sounds different, a lot lower of a sound...but it does have a similar sound. THat was a cold start so it didn't sound as good. But with the STi exhaust, it was low enough to set off alarms in a garage...so to give you an idea how it is.

Dont want to hijack the thread.. this is kinda on topic here... I just got a 06 WRX axleback... it was cheap like 30 bucks.. I have a different set up and it really drones loud in the car ( sedan) 05 RS sport package. SO i want to put the WRX axleback on with a custom 2.25 in mid section with no resonator... I saw someone up top said with out the resonator it will drone loud.. but I did not think it would do this with a stock muffler. any thoughts.. hearing it a lil would be okay but dont want anything like I have now which is quite bad. thx - andy

73datsun,

Any chance you could post a sound clip? I've got an STI axleback off of an '06 that I'm planning on putting on my '06 2.5i Impreza come spring. I plan on simply having the flange rotated correctly so that I can throw the stock exhaust back on if I want.

Also, are you using the stock RS hangers and if so, how does the muffler section hang? On the '06 the tip looks like it sits a lot lower than the one on my '04 RS did. I'm curious how the STI tip fits since it's larger in diameter.

Thanks,
Bill

This is interesting. My brother wants to do the same mod; he is only concerned that he will not gain anything and only waste his money

Get a Stromung. It bolts right on. I had one on my Outback Sport. I got it used for like $250 and worth every penny. Great sound too. You will be very happy. My WRX sounds good with a Prodrive, but not nearly as cool as my OBS.

mine has no resonators. i had a custom midpipe welded to the axelback.

also, the thing that looks like a cat right at the point in the midpipe where it connects to the cat pipe is NOT a cat, it's hollow and a special resonator used to supress off throttle rich 'rally burps'. it's not a catalytic and the shop told me they couldn't remove it unless it wasn't a cat- i assured them it wasn't and they said "well we can cut in so we can check to see but if it is a cat we won't remove it." so i said that's fine and they were suprised when i was right

These reviews are exactly what I was wanting to hear... I wanted the higher flow rate of the muffler without too much noise... and that sounds like I will be getting exactly what I want.... and I still have the second axle back to either go mufflerless with or put a high flow, loud-ass muffler on for that ricer in me...

Good to hear all of the sound clips!!!
