Default Bmxpunk's rallycar build

So here is my rallycar project that has been coming for a long time. Bought this 95 imp Brighton in 2001. Later swapped on a 2.2t followed closely by a somewhat built 2.2t. During the second build I started to race stage rally in an open light impreza that a friend and I built. That's the car Justin Pritchard most recently used to school some open class cars at 100acre wood.

Most recently I had this cage completed by Grant and Scott at the Colorado Rally Group. Its a very tight fitting cage and the CRG guys took their time with this and will be offering these cage kits for gc bodies soon.

Suspension arms will all be provided by William at TSSFab.

With lots to do still, first event I hope to make will be temple canyon hill climb in Colorado in early may.

Are you going to mount the shoulder harnesses to that current bar behind the seat? It looks a little low.

I looked at that today and at the rules again so it's something I want to look into more. And if someone could explain the rule to me. I saw the 10* or less part, then the drawing in the RA rule book makes it seem like the angle of the seat comes into play.

Shouldn't affect the codriver as that seat is lower, and I am looking for slightly lower brackets myself.

Also looking at the fia rule it says between horizontal and 45*with 10 being optimal.

The RA text says between horizontal at 10*, but the picture in the rule book appears to be a generic FIA drawing that supports the FIA rule you quoted above.

Call Mike Hurst at RA and send pics.

Rules or not, that bar is way too low to mount harnesses.

Is TSSFab going to do front control arms for you too? I've see all his other work, but did not think he was doing those for GC track width cars.

My car is going to have the sti track width. I just installed some 07 sti front arms last night, until TSS has the front design down. Going the sti route I figured finding/buying/begging/borrowing spares will be easier.

As far as mike hurst goes, he has all of these pictures and more and has already sent my log book.

I'm looking forward to seeing this car done and racing. Given your 2009 Colorado Cup Open Lights title in your old car, I know that you've got what it takes to get it done. Here's hoping to be involved in this car like we were with the last one...

I don't know if I could pin down a budget.

Do as much as I can laborwise myself to keep cost down. Get much appreciated help from friends in the forms of discounts, labor, and knowledge.

I do nearly any side work I can find which is everything from car repair to cat sitting (not kidding in the slightest there).

To give you an idea I will have around $6-7000 in safety gear alone. Of course that has been spread out over some time.

Doesn't appear to be that low to me, from the second picture. Defnintely rather have it a little "too" low than too high.

I measured and the bar is about 15* below on the drivers side and my seat is laid back about 18*.

Here is my engine management solution. At least for the time being.

this board is made by enduring solutions ltd out of the uk. It plugs directly into the socket on most ej20g (or20k) ecus and is tuned via laptop through the data connector. It makes the old ecu's tunable like the modern units. I like the fact that it keeps factory functions like knock control and closed loop boost control. It's the second most affordable EM solution besides the rob tune, but it gives me a little more precision to deal with the 34mm restrictor that has to go on the turbo. It is also possible to switch between 2preloaded maps in the ecu without having to reattach a computer. Motorsport functions like anti-lag and launch control are rumored to be in the works for this summer.

After shipping and the cable to tune it, just under $600.

A friend whipped these up for me today. time to get welding.

I have a new pedal set on the way with a balance bar and dual masters so it's time to invest in some brake hard line. Schroth harnesses also on the way. TrAnsmission has to come out for some new gears and a new front differential. First hill climb I am trying to make is June 16 so I have some work ahead of me.

What pedal set did you go with? I've been thinking of going down that path.

What are you doing as far as gearbox goes?

I know it costs, but a 6 speed with a competition front LSD goes a long way towards reliability.

We had a Legacy RS, 5 speed dog box. Kept breaking front crown wheel and pinions. A common occurrence the faster you go. It also depends how hard you are going to drive it and how much horsepower.

The setup we had in our GC8 (and later in the legacy) was an 06 6 speed with DCCD with a plated front LSD and motec centre diff controller. Worked brilliantly

from Turn In Concept's at this weekend Global Time Attack at Road Atlanta:

Should be interesting to see if the Moore Sport brace kit can help with this.

Is that a 5 or a 6 speed - looks like a 5

Impressive - front diff broke the casing

BTW - early 5 speed casings (I think they are the 4 bolt ones) are even more prone to breaking.

Head back from Mike Hurst today, harness bar does have to go up. Apparently I fall well within the FIA rule (max 45* recommend 10*) but not the RA rule of max 10*.

Because of the new pedalbox I also need to move the driver seat mounts back a bit.

I also wanted to add some support bars between the rear strut towers and from the bottom of the main hoop to the strut towers where the back stays meet. From reading the rule book and what other people have said I assumed I could use smaller diameter tubing 1" or 1.25" x0.095" but the email I received from Mike also said that isn't the case. Any additions to the cage must be at least 1.5"x0.095".

1 set forward 2 steps back.
