Default quick ratio steering

After reading about the new Evo VII and its quick ratio steering I began wondering (again) if something like this was available for the Impreza RS. A search turned up some (very) old posts talking about ripping parts from the WRX. Interestingly, there was a post from Trey Cobb talking about looking into making a 12:1 rack for the RS. Someone else suggested talking to Quaife. Does anyone know if anything ever came of that? Is it possible to improve the steering ratio on my RS without having to drop $1500?

Try $2600. Not a viable option really. Not too many LHD STi RAs, and most of them go to you-know-who.

As an alternative, my mechanic suggested a good old fashioned quickener for less than $1000 including fabrication and installation.

In the earlier thread I was reading -- http://www.i-club.com/forums/showthr...+steering+rack -- DMS-USA said they can get quick ratio LHD group A steering racks for $1600-$1700 that are about 2.25-2.5 turns lock-to-lock.

But I'm really curious about Trey Cobb's comments about doing a limited production run if there was enough interest here on the board. I'd like a quicker rack but not enough to spend $1500+ on it

Were the costs too prohibitive or was there not enough interest on the board to support cheaper prices? I'm just jealous of those people who can buy quicker guts for $150

Not anymore, that was a while ago.

There are probably any number of gearcutters that would make quick ratio guts for a big enough production run. I know Quaife's usual minimum order for a custom run is 25 units. All you need are the rack and the pinion gear. It's not hard to install in your housing. I've bought quick ratio rack kits like this for Opel and Volvo rally cars and they only cost about $150-$200.

I would be down with a group buy for all the parts needed to do a 12:1 steering ratio if it's under $200! Now who wants to spearhead this expedition?

EDIT: fixed typo (like always)

I'd be in too!

What do we have to do? Just contact a gear manufacturer and get them to make a different sized pinion and rack gear? Thats not so hard............if thats the case....

anyone have a stock steering box lying around?????

Keep this BUMPED!!!!!

I'd be in too. Quicker steering would go a long way to making the car "feel" better!

I think you guys are in fantasyland... $200, hah!

Count me in if you can find someone who'll do it for <$1000.

The reason the Subaru kits have, thus far, been really expensive is because they have been made in extremely small numbers. If they were produced in quantity like the kits for many other cars, they would be an order of magnitude cheaper. I'm in for any price under $500, especially if the steering effort increases (which I assume it would if the ratio improved without an increase in power steering assist).

What would be potential problems one might face with such an aftermarket steering rack? Play possibly? What about periodic adjustments and/or material fatigue leading to bunching or binding steering? I'm hoping a well sorted conversion will address all of these issues.

Also would there be any weatherproofing/rallyproofing issues?

A good start might be to source an LHD STi RA 13:1 rack and pull that sucker apart. I'm sure it shares a bunch of components with our 16.5:1 rack. I'm no machinist, but I bet its easier to just copy a part than make it from scratch.

Why would it cost so much? I mean, i'm no steering rack expert, but I assume theres a pinion gear on the end of the steering rack, and a rack gear (I dunno what you call it...the "flat gear") on the rack itself. Right? Cant you simply manufacture a smaller pinion gear with matchin rack? I'm sure a group buy of 25 gears wouldnt cost us EACH $1K!!! I dunno, I'm a little (OK, a lot) uneducated about steering racks.......

Well yeah the individual materials ain't all that much but the initial setup costs might be kinda hefty. The marginal unit cost might not be that bad, but they gotta recoup those initial costs. Anyway, if Quaife ever gets back to me we'll know how much it'll cost.

Do the USDM WRX's and RS's have the same steering rack? This could affect our numbers because there would have to be separate prototypes made and reduce our group buying power.

Or will it be different because of the difference in vehicle width? If so, what about the WRX sedan and WRX wagon because the sedan is slightly wider.

This seems like a fantastic idea. I'm in if someone can come up wit the proper people to develop the product. That would be awesome if was + or - $200.00, but I'm not counting on anything.

It would really surprise me if the 02 RS and WRX were different. <01 RS might be different though.
