i've really been wanting to work on my profile shots. and i usually crop them way too tight. i went and shot my new wheel set up with Jag and we both agreed the location was suitable for some nice profiles

the rest of the set can be found at this post. (few other angles)

Usually during the day you can shoot at high enough shutter speeds that will allow you to get away with not using a tripod. I don't do a lot of photography any more, but I used to car an expandable monopod for those times that you wish you had a little more support under that heavy camera (canon 50d (gripped) w/ 70-200 2.8).

The only thing I would say you need IS for, is if you want to do panning shots. But I wouldn't jump into them unless you really want them. They are fairly difficult and will be quite frustrating to a novice.
You really have a steady hand then sir. I've seen a lot of your pictures and they are really nice. I would use my tripod if I was trying to do prepared shots...whenever I could. There were/are times (meets) when setting up a tripod isn't going to work out well.

I like night shots if they are done well.

POTN usually has great lenses for a good prices. I bought my 24-70 2.8L there and found my 70-200 2.8 L on craigslist (just be sure to bring your body with you and do some test pictures, most photographers understand and there is little or no pressure).

If I can find a great deal on the 2.8 that would be great but it looks like im going to go with the f/4. It should be more than enough for me right now.

So. I am back with some pictures from this weekend

I dont know wher to start, so many damn nice cars and pictures to work on.
I wanna show some of the first i edited (wher im still not that good in) !!!

My main focus was to get good battleshots because i had never done some.

Its damn hard to get both cars perfectly in focus at 1/60 and in this particular corner. So im happy with this one for the first attempt.

I managed to get my first dirtdrop pic, not perfectly sharp bust still ok.

Some others i took during the day

After that i started to go lower with the shutterspeeds to

1/30 in this one

1/15 in this one

cheers

chris

I agree. Those last two drifting shots are phenomenal. I think 1/30th or slower looks best.

But is there any reason all the cars are leaving the frame? I wish they were on the other side...

Good stuff! The Subaru is a tiny bit blown out, but each photo is nice and sharp. I use a 3-stop ND filter with my polarizer when I do slow pans and I think you could benefit from the same, if you plan to do more in the future

You're off to a good start, Eric. There's a bit too much vignetting for my taste and the angles on the bottom too are a little extreme. Otherwise, the lighting is pretty good, but they're a bit on the underexposed side. Also, be mindful of distractions in the background, particularly poles growing out of your car.

Not a bad location, but I wouldn't necessarily say good, especially with the tree growing out of the car. The car also looks a little soft and the overall contrast seems pretty high.

Excellent shots, Chris...especially your slow pans! I still think your contrast is pretty high overall for all of the photos though...you just might need to raise the blacks and shadows up a little bit and you should be good to go. As far as getting both cars in focus, KP nailed it down by focusing on the front of the trailing car, and often times you're able to get both cars in focus.

Both of your photos here have issues with cut-off...the car in the first shot has the rear of the car cut off for no particular reason, and the rear wheel is cut off at a strange place in the second shot. I'm also not sold on the location, and the first photo seems a tiny bit underexposed overall.

Yes, for drifting you can "break the rules" a bit since you want to make sure you've got smoke flowing to show that the car's drifting. I actually took some drifting photos last weekend myself...I was practicing my slow pans as well! Here are some samples, all at 1/30 sec:

And some wide angle pans too:

Tons more here!

Awesome shots as always Armin! Here are two more from a couple weeks ago. They were shot with my 18-55mm (my only lens), so I had crop them and blow them up.
