i was going for the 5d mk II but honestly, after shooting with the 60d, the **** do i need something so pro for. my photos are for ME, and i enjoy the process.
as for the 50mm, i personally found that focal length to be useless on the crop body. i ****ing HATED it. all of the photos that went "viral" of mine were either taken with the nikor 35 1.8 OR tamron 18-270. most newbs pic up the lowest aperture lens they can and shoot wide open, don't get me wrong the background blur is awesome but its not all that great. these primes are much better shot at f3-6, thats where it is the SHARPEST. however having a low aperture is awesome at night and makes it super fast during the day. but its not all about shooting at 1.8...or 1.4. honestly, don't throw your money away for 1.4-1.2. you're still learning and the 35mm 1.8 will be a killer lens! if you take my word on anything, buy the 35 1.8 and a circular polarizer. i would highly recommend the 35mm 1.8 on a crop body. its epic. my next purchase will be sigma 18-35 1.8 then saving all my pennies for 85 1.2. if you want EPIC depth of field, learn to stitch photos in post and then yo'll end up with a 1.0-1.2 outcome from a 1.8 lens. this is called the brenizer method, xluben has done it a few times with his shots, and it looks sick. but i don't do a lot of post editing so its not of use to me... http://blog.buiphotos.com/2009/07/the-brenizer-method-explained-with-directions/ look, i like your enthusiasm, but until you literally can take a good shot with your eyes closed no need to upgrade. get two lenses (one prime, one walk around) that you can KILL with. then go for the speciality stuff. and i snapped some new shots this weekend, gonna go play around with editing, don't really like this set i have but i guess i'll post them anyway

I appreciate the honest feedback. Ask Orbital, he knows how enthusiastic I can be. Always plotting and scheming with wanton abandon! I will seriously consider everything you've said. I'm hoping to pick up a proper lens this week and the 35mm 1.8G is very affordable. I think I'll pick that up and a 16-85 zoom to replace my 18-55 standard zoom that I broke.
I love it when you talk technical with me. |

In other news, my other JDM 86 exhaust tip shipped today. $55 shipped. In the end I will have spent $24 more than just ordering from Japanparts.com directly...

My other lens is a 55-200 which I actually use for bird watching. Love that lens. |

yupp i know that lens, i had both and sold it for my tamron.
its honestly looks like another kit lens, look for something that is more like the canon 24-70 2.8 something that will be great as a walk around, no need to get another kit equivalent especially if you're going to drop close to 1k on a lens! |

Okay, how about this: I'll take baby steps and only pick up the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G with CP for right now. After I give that a try for a bit, THEN I'll figure out which lens is missing from my repertoire. Deal? I guess I'm just used to a lens that gives me some room close up but also allows zooming, so a mid-range 24-85 (or so) just doesn't sound appealing to me. I wish I could try one out... I'll have to check on that some more, maybe a buddy has something in that range. It probably just boils down to my not realizing that with a fixed focal length I can just move myself instead of zooming or unzooming the lens...

Exactly, I don't understand what you're zooming in on that you'd always need 100+mm focal lengths as a constant.
Good plan. 35mm and cp. You'll have a ****ing BLAST. because now you'll actually be shooting instead of standing still |

There are times when I'm just chilling and my niece or some animal will do something random that having zoom is really nice for capturing. Does it happen a LOT? No, not really. Does it bother me that much? No, I guess not. A fixed focal length will save me money anyways, I guess, as I continue to explore and learn, determining how full force I want to take this hobby.

So much talking, not enough pictures. I just met some guy in Anchorage with an Altima SE-R. He said the snow hasn't been bad this year, but he has like a 2-foot beard and looked like a mountain man. So hopefully it's not actually bad. I'm done rambling, I hope the car has been treating you good.

Yeah, well I'm just now getting into cropping later. I don't think you realize just how much I've avoided doing any post-processing. So time-consuming. I just wanna snap and share! I gotta work on that mentality, though.

honestly, post for me is far less then what you think, you see what my photos are, very basic stuff.
i have a lot of presets, so most of the time i take a photo, click preset, adjust a bit and DONE. maybe less than 3 minutes per photo. its really not that hard, some just need som WB adjustment, some need exposure/blackpoint. maybe mess with curves. its really easy man. come to jersey and i'll set you up right! xv button...i can taste it |

Just picked up a 35mm and CP from Best Buy. Got a 1-year warranty as well since apparently I have an obsession with breaking technology. This is why the BRZ works for me since it's not very technologically advanced, seeing as how it's pretty much just a parts bin car.

I figured you'd bring that up. That's still a borrowed technology, fool.

Yaye! Still around 3PM Alaska time right now. Plus I have an appointment at 6 to 7. They didn't have my lens in stock at the Best Buy by my work, only across town by my house, so I'll have to pick it up once I'm on my way home, so not until about 7:30ish. Long day is long.

Ugh. Shooting at night is such a PITA.
Good learning experience, though, as always. |
